A bomb was buried for 73 years before being discovered on a building site has been detonated.

The British Army were called in to investigate the unexploded bomb after it was unearthed in Rowan Drive in Hendon at around 2pm on June 19.

Revealed to be a World War Two bomb, it was destroyed in a controlled explosion today at around 12pm.

A structure of heavy sand bags were placed on top of the explosive and wired with other explosives readying the device for detonation.

An 86 metre cordon was set up around the bomb and the building site and local school, North London Grammar School, was closed.

This cordon was removed after the bomb was successfully detonated.

A police spokesperson said: “Police were called at around 2.00pm on Tuesday, June 19 to reports of a suspected unexploded World War Two ordnance in Rowan Drive, Hendon.

“At approximately midday on Wednesday, 20 June a controlled explosion was carried out.

“All cordons have now been removed.

“We would like to thank the local community for their patience while this situation was dealt with.”
