London Assembly members have reacted to Sadiq Khan’s announcement that he will be campaigning to be the Mayor of London again in 2020.

Mr Khan confirmed his intentions one Wednesday during an appearance on singer Jessie Ware’s podcast.

He said: “I will be running again to be the mayor, yes – that’s the first time I’ve said that publicly.”

But various assembly members expressed their concerns following his announcement.

Conservative London Assembly member Susan Hall called it a “massive disappointment”.

Ms Hall added: “He makes lots of promises he can’t keep, I think a Conservative should be running for mayor. The prospect of him in office again would not do London any favours at all.”

Other Conservative assembly members were also quick to chip in on social media.

Keith Prince said that Londoners deserve better than “broken promises” and Tony Devenish added: “Do you actually plan to do anything Sadiq Khan?”

Liberal Democrat assembly member, Caroline Pidgeon said she understood why he was running again but said she hopes he achieves more in his second term than his first.

Ms Pidgeon added: “Previous Mayors of London made big changes to London, such as introducing Oyster, part pedestrianising Trafalgar Square, rolling out the cycle hire scheme and adopting bold measures to tackle congestion.”

“In complete contrast Sadiq Khan has little to show for his time in office so he must be hoping he is given a second chance to start tackling some of the massive challenges facing the capital.”

Umnesh Desai, Labour party assembly member however welcomed the announcement.

He said: “Based on the work he has done so far in his term he deserves a second term. I am sure Londoners will get him to a second term that he will need to carry us through his housing programme and opposing Brexit challenges.”
