Oliver Dowden has welcomed the news that a number of commuters will receive compensation after weeks and weeks of disruption on the railways.

Govia Thameslink Railway announced last week that season ticket holders who travel from Elstree & Borehamwood, Radlett, Potters Bar, and the borough of Barnet, will be given a month’s worth of compensation, following the chaotic timetable change.

Individual journeys could also be compensated too.

Hertsmere MP Mr Dowden said that Govia will be stripped of their franchise if the problems persist after a new timetable was brought in on July 15.

Speaking this week, Hertsmere MP Mr Dowden said: “I am pleased that Govia Thameslink have finally announced their plans for a proper compensation system for those affected by the disruption to Thameslink and Great Northern.

“Season ticket holders will be given a month’s worth of compensation for the disruption they have faced since May. While I agree that this does not make up for the scale of disruption passengers have faced over the last month it is at least a step in the right direction.

“I would like to be clear though that if this scale of disruption to Thameslink and Great Northern services continues under the new interim timetable then Govia Thameslink will be stripped of their franchise, and I know that the Transport Secretary has started to prepare for this.”
