A school’s new head paid tribute to her predecessor for being a “philosopher, and role model” for 20 years.

Nick Christou was the headteacher of East Barnet School, this year he has retired to “pass the baton”.

Leann Swaine is the new head of East Barnet School in Chestnut Grove in Barnet and has praised Mr Christou for his service to the community.

She said: “Much like one of the sculptures lining the entrance to our school, I am delighted to say that I have been passed the acorn from Mr Christou.

“He has led the school for the last 20 years; inspiring and motivating thousands of students and their families.

“He is a teacher, philosopher and role model, who has shaped the culture and ethos of the school encouraging students to develop their sense of empathy, integrity and justice while harnessing a love of learning.”

As part of Ms Swaine’s preparation for headship, she visited schools in Washington DC in the USA and travelled around UK schools.

Mentored by Mr Christou, she added: “What I have found is that the culture here at East Barnet School really is quite special and it is both an honour and privilege to accept the baton to continue and develop the ethos create by a man who has influenced the lives of so many.”
