A family captured the moment they helped bring two moped thieves to justice on dash cam.

Filming the pursuit and arrest, the driver and his family followed two riders in balaclavas into the car park of Asda Colindale superstore, off Capitol Way, on July 28.

The burgundy moped had been reported stolen at knifepoint the day before.

The suspects

Times Series:

The driver, who asked not to be named other than as North London Dash Cammer, received over 430,000 hits when he posted his video online.

It shows a gripping 11-minutes in which the masked men circle the car park seemingly looking for victims as the family try to get through to police, and which culminates in the men’s arrest.

Speaking to the Barnet Times, he said: “We literally just pulled out of the car park and saw them wearing balaclavas.

“I had my family in the car and they may have had a weapon or acid, so we just kept our distance and observed them.

“They were circling around a grey Jaguar. I think they wanted to steal it or rob the owner.

“We were thinking we might be spotted - they rode right in front of us. I am surprised they didn’t see us.”

The family call the police with the moped’s registration but are held in a queue for several minutes. The driver can be heard saying: “You’re in a queue to 999? Are you joking me? What a joke.

“What if there was a stabbing or a murder?”

Speaking to the Barnet Times he said: “The time it took to get through was quite shocking. Really long.

“I did think about leaving because I didn’t think the police would come. I am kind of lost for words. You shouldn’t be waiting that long.”

The chase

Times Series:

Officers arrive 12 minutes later, at which point the two men fall off the moped and run with the police in pursuit.

The family’s car follows the officers down a ramp, but the police have blocked the exits and the suspects are quickly surrounded and arrested.

Speaking about the incident, the driver said: “It was quite exciting when the police arrived. The police were quite overjoyed when they caught them.

“Despite the 12-minute wait they came in five police cars. Considering it was the top floor of the car park they had them really well covered.

“I was pleased with the police. It was refreshing to know they came in numbers despite waiting so long on the call.”

The arrest

Times Series:

Police confirmed the moped was reported stolen at knifepoint in Wakemans Hill Avenue the day before.

Two men, both aged 16, were arrested on suspicion of robbery and taken to a north London police station. They have been bailed until mid-August.

North London Dash Cammer added: “I wasn’t afraid of them. They are cowards if they wear balaclavas and rob people.”

Police said in response: "The total number of 999 and 101 calls to the Met has increased significantly over the past 18 months - we are looking at the possible reasons for this increase.

"This increase in demand has impacted upon service levels which are lower this year than in previous years. But call handlers are still answering 999 calls, on average, in 16 seconds.

"The increase demand is thought to be, in part, due to factors such as an increasing population and the reduction of some out-of-hours services by other service providers.

"Further work and analysis has been commissioned to help the Met fully understand what is driving the increase and we are continually looking at ways to improve our service."
