A paedophile who committed a string of sex attacks against children as young as 18 months old was spared jail last week, prompting a torrent of criticism over the leniency of his sentence.

Michael Porter, 38, of Okehampton Close, North Finchley, walked free from Bristol Crown Court last week, despite admitting three charges of gross indecency and 22 charges of indecent assault.

Judge Thomas Crowther QC decided that 'complex' issues in Porter's childhood made his actions 'understandable' and sentenced him to a three-year community rehabilitation order.

He was also handed a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, banning unsupervised contact with children under 18 and living or sleeping at an address where there are children.

Judge Crowther said: "What's important to realise is that you had changed your life before there was any question of these matters being revealed and I'm as satisfied as I can be."

The Attorney General is considering appealing the ruling, which also sparked anger from Porter's victims, child welfare groups and his own sister, Tina Hughes.

Ms Hughes, 40, of Clevedon, near Bristol, said: "He hasn't lost anything. He hasn't even lost his wife. He hasn't been affected in any way. He can go away and pretend nothing has happened because he doesn't have to live here.

"Nothing happened to him as a child. He was the angel of all the family. He is who he is, a paedophile. He will never be safe on the streets."

Michele Elliott, of charity Kidscape, said the sentence was an 'appalling, horrific decision'.

She added: "If ever there was a man who deserved to be in prison, it's this man. He will be a continued danger to children for the rest of his life. I hope the judge can sleep at night."

Porter carried out his attacks between 1986 and 2000, groping boys as they slept in bed and taking advantage of children as he babysat them.

He handed himself in to police in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, last October, after one victim went to leaders of the Portishead Jehovah's Witness church, where he and his family were members.

Robert Davies, prosecuting, said some of the victims were unaware they had been abused, including an 18-month-old baby and a three-year-old boy.

This week, leaders of the Jehovah's Witness church refuted widespread claims that the church was standing by the paedophile.

Jehovah's Witness spokesman Tony Brace, based at the church's national headquarters at The Ridgeway, Mill Hill, said: "Anyone who has been convicted of this type of offence would be removed from office immediately. He would neither be allowed to be an elder nor a charity trustee.

"Of course, he could attend as a member of the public, but the elders of that particular church would keep a strict eye on him."

Peter Bell, presiding overseer of Jehovah's Witness centre, at Kingdom Hall, East Barnet Road, denied media reports that Porter had ever been an elder there.

He said: "The courts misreported the facts. Porter has never been an elder here and never will be. He will not be an elder anywhere.

"He was removed from the church in November as soon as his actions were known. We have a strict protocol that anytime something like this happens, we direct them to go immediately to the police, which is what he did."

The Watchtower organization allows convicted pedophiles to go knocking door to door to as part of their belief requirement.

Jehovah's Witnesses have a BIG child abuse pedophile cover-up crisis.

Pedophilia is covered up in the Jehovah's Witnesses on a scale worst than the Catholic priest scandal. Not only do they deny it but the Watchtower has instructed the Kingdom Hall elders to go after all whistle-blowers.

The JW's exploit an obscure 2,000 year old bible passage and demand that there be TWO witnesses to every act of child abuse committed by a Jehovah's Witness. This fosters a code of silence and a "pedophile's paradise" in the Jehovah's Witnesses.

The 'Two Witness' Take-Down is a subterfuge exploited by Jehovah's Witnesses that is selectively enforced by elders who play favorites and fast & loose with the truth,an excuse to ignore and suppress evidence at whim.

As with all authoritarian sects that are based on the teachings of some charismatic man (Russell, Rutherford, et al) they eventually turn sour and start to persecute the persecuted. They turn self-righteous and attack others for their supposed moral improprieties. So goes the Watchtower.

Here's an example of the Watchtower Society's practice of "Theocratic Warfare" deceptive speaking which many to most of us might call "lying:"

It says "Peter Bell, presiding overseer of Jehovah's Witness centre, at Kingdom Hall, East Barnet Road, denied media reports that Porter had ever been an elder there. He said: "The courts misreported the facts. Porter has never been an elder here and never will be. He will not be an elder anywhere."

Bell says truthfully that Porter wasn't an elder here, meaning the kingdom hall at East Barnet" and truthfully we should hope says "He will not be an elder anywhere." This to those not reading closely will also seem to mean Poreter never was an elder anywhere else either, which is false.

How do we know that's false. He was a trustee, a position entrusted only to elders. So Bell is trying to mislead the public and this particular newspaper got suckered into it. They, also the Hare Krishnas and the Aryan Nations are the only church groups I have read of who practice Theocratic Warfare.

I love my adult daughters still JWs but the Watchtower Society over JWs keeps sending pedophiles along with my daughters, other JW women and JW children, and it's a dangerous practice that also puts the Public's children in danger.

Another high profile JW pedophile was Jesus Manuel Cano, a Bethel staffer in New York. When they are in the top echelons all kinds of Theocratic Warfare tactics are used to protect such pedophiles.

Of interest also is that it's been alleged (not proved but openly alleged) by now deceased Pat Garza that a standing member of the world Governing Body and arguably its most powerful member, molested herself when she was a child in Los Angeles where he was then District Overseer.

This organization needs to confess it errors to both its grassroots members and the Public around the world. I love all good, decent JWs but the Watchtower Society heads over them maintain pro-pedophile policies endangering people everywhere. In no other religious group do so-called "repentant" pedophiles get sent preaching door-to-door.

I find it revolting that the Watchtower organization will form an internal JUDICIAL committee to discuss the alleged sins* of a member and possibly excommunicate / shun that person without even a single witness to the offense being present but then..get this, require children to produce two eye witnesses for their alleged sexual abuse. And what happens if they can’t produce two eye witnesses?
Then this poor kid has to be victimized all over again while they sit powerless before this all-male committee along with their abuser to describe their abuse in horrific detail. This inquisition, which is NOT handled by sexual abuse experts, in turn creates a secondary wounding when the child is told they must “treat brother so-and-so as though he was a member in good standing” because it’s their word against his. As a result, many Jehovah Witness children have been sent back to the “care” of their abuser where they can be raped all over again! There’s something seriously wrong with this!

Quite honestly what have Jehovah's Witnesses done now to send the white knights of self rightious indignation to their blazing keyboards.
Surely in any large group of people there are going to be some bad eggs. So in truth its the exJehovah's Witnesses one needs to watch out for:the ones disciplined for unrepentant wrongdoing.

Jehovah's Witnesses have an absurd in house Church rule requiring 'two witnesses' to acts of sin. This makes it difficult to prosecute secret sins as child molesters rarely provide a 'witness' to their dastardly deeds.

Moreover, members are discouraged from going to 'outsiders' the police and reporting sins.
That's it,..this is what can make the pedophilia worst among the Jehovah's Witnesses group compared with other mainstream religions.

I can only assume the judge didnt jail him so that those abused by Michael Porter can hunt him down and take revenge on him in a manner that they see fit,i suggest they start with bolt cutters.

The only call the cops if it comes out to the press, such as cases like this. Otherwise its kept totally quiet; this has happened hundreds of times and the stories by abuse victims are ALL OVER THE PLACE. In a local "Kingdom" Hall , there were numerous cases of abuse, sexual as well as physical, that were swept under the rug, "Only ONE witness, and the child "doesn't count"", and outright ignored.

Pathetic excuse for "Gods Organization"

My cousin was molested by an elder next door before her teenage years. He was "deleted" as an elder. When his wife died he married a woman with 3 grown kids and moved to New York. He was then "appointed" as a pioneer minister. Then he moved to Indiana and was found re-appointed as an elder.
Was it the holy spirit that kept re-appointing this guy? I think not, but YOU had better think so or you will be disfellowshipped as an apostate!
