Understrength Hornets crash out of Cup

THERE will be no repeat of last season's run to The FA Cup Semi-Finals for Watford after Aidy Boothroyd's decision to field a weakened team backfired as Wolves progressed into round five with an easy 4-1 victory at Vicarage Road this afternoon (Saturday).

Inspired by livewire left-winger Matthew Jarvis, the visitors got off to a flying start thanks to Andy Keogh's fifth-minute lob. Second-half goals from Stephen Elliott and Jay Bothroyd - both the result of some shocking defending from the home side - then put the visitors on easy street before John-Joe O'Toole netted a consolation.

However, any hopes of what looked to be an unlikely comeback anyway were killed off in the last minute when Keogh netted his second to make it just one win, and six losses, for the Hornets in their last ten outings at Vicarage Road.

The Hornets boss gave a clear indication of where his priorities lie by making six changes from the side that drew 1-1 against Charlton Athletic last time out.

New signing Mat Sadler, as expected, made his debut, while Malky Mackay came in for his first start of the season after Calum Davenport's loan was prematurely curtailed by injury. Steve Kabba, Al Bangura and O'Toole formed a new-look midfield and Tamas Priskin came in to partner Nathan Ellington up front. Of those that were left out, Tommy Smith and Jordan Stewart were on the bench, but Lee Williamson, Damien Francis and Darius Henderson were all rested.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy was always going to have to make two changes following the 2-0 win at Scunthorpe United last time out because David Edwards and Sylvain Ebanks-Blake were cup tied, but he also decided to drop Michael Gray to the bench. In came Rob Edwards, Darren Potter and Bothroyd.

The game started fairly evenly with both sides having early attacks but it was the visitors who made the breakthrough with the first attempt of note after five minutes. Mackay, under pressure from Bothroyd, stumbled as he sought to head clear and the ball bounced through to Keogh, who, from 20 yards out, produced a delightful right-footed lob that gave Richard Lee little chance to make it 1-0.

Watford's first opening came three minutes later when the ball broke to Jobi McAnuff and he drove inside off the left flank but flashed a right-footed attempt from the edge of the area well wide.

But the Hornets could have found themselves two down in the 15th minute when Neil Collins found Jarvis in far too much space down the left, and the former Gillingham wide-man surged into the area before cutting the ball back to Bothroyd, but he placed his shot too close to Lee.

Within two minutes though, Watford were so nearly back on terms. Priskin won a free-kick on the edge of the Wolves box and Ellington curled the ball over the wall and beyond the reach of Wayne Hennessey, only to see it rebound out off the keeper's left-hand post and out to Bangura, who was unable to control the follow-up.

Boosted by that, Watford pushed forward again and Kabba was unlucky to see a goalbound effort deflected behind soon after.

However, Wolves continued to look dangerous and it was their turn to hit the woodwork in the 33rd minute. Following a corner from the right, Hornets old boy Darren Ward peeled off Mackay and headed down and against Lee's right-hand upright from the edge of the six-yard box.

Little then happened until a minute before the break when Watford were awarded a free-kick 25 yards out, but this time Ellington's set-piece hit the wall and ran harmlessly through to Hennessey.

A less than impressive first-half performance from the Hornets was then greeted by the predictable boos as Wolves took a one-goal advantage into the break.

And the visitors almost doubled that lead within a minute of the restart. Darren Potter threaded a pass through to Keogh on the left side of the area and he turn found the unmarked Bothroyd, but Lee did well to block his close-range effort.

But Watford should then have had a chance of their own soon after when Priskin broke at two Wolves defenders, but instead of sliding the ball to Kabba, who had made a run into space to his right, the Hungarian dallied and the opportunity was lost.

On 53 minutes though, the home side did manage to get in an attempt. After a free-kick had been partially cleared, Lloyd Doyley's fine pass found Sadler in space and on-side on the left side of the area, but the new Hornets left-back could only fire into the side-netting.

However, the home side's hopes of another good cup run looked to be ended in the 59th minute when they were ripped apart by a fine and incisive passing move. Jarvis started it with a good pass to the left to Keogh, who, with only Sadler covering in the middle, bided his time before sliding the ball sideways to Elliott, who calmly beat Lee to make it 2-0.

Boothroyd responded by bringing on Smith for Priskin, and then Karl Henry picked up the game's first yellow card, before Watford were carved apart again on 68 minutes. This time Potter found Jarvis breaking into the six-yard box and he put the third on a plate for Bothroyd.

However, Watford gave themselves a glimmer of hope three minutes later. Following a Kabba cross from the right, Ellington battled to open up a shooting chance but the ball broke for O'Toole, who calmly took a step sideways before rolling the ball past the static and helpless Hennessey to make it 3-1.

The Hornets then almost set up a dramatic climax when Smith stood up a fantastic cross from the right and Ellington got up well on the edge of the six-yard box, only to send his header the wrong side of Hennessey's left-hand post.

Adrian Mariappa then came on for Mackay, before Ellington sent a more difficult heading opportunity over the top following Kabba's deep ball in from the right.

But Wolves could have had a fourth after 81 minutes when Potter put Keogh in behind the Hornets defence, but, with Jarvis unmarked in the middle, the striker got caught in two minds and sent a cross-cum-shot across the six-yard box.

However, Keogh did grab a second in the last minute of normal time when Bothroyd played the ball across to Keogh, who shifted the ball onto his right foot before firing through the legs of Doyley and past the helpless Lee.

Watford: Lee; Doyley, DeMerit, Mackay (Mariappa, 76), Sadler; Kabba, O'Toole, Bangura, McAnuff; Priskin (Smith, 62), Ellington. Not used: Stewart, Rinaldi and Poom.

Wolverhampton Wanderers: Hennessey, Foley, Edwards, Ward, Collins; Elliott, Potter, Henry (Kightly, 90), Jarvis (Gray, 84); Keogh, Bothroyd (Gibson, 90). Not used: Breen and Stack.

Bookings: Henry for dissent after 64 mins; Bothroyd for time-wasting after 86 mins.

Attendance: 12,719.

You useless jug eared prat!

How many more humiliations have we got to endure before this prat of a manager is booted out...and his sorry excuse of a chairman.

It doesn't matter who comes in...no one will "thrive" under this archaic system he hasimposed. Tactically he hasn't got a clue. Any manager worth his money can out wit this dim wit!

Watford will be relegated under this prat next season....4-2 at home to QPR, now 4-1 at home to Wolves.

Clappers this is relegation form, make no mistake. As Neil Price has just said, we resemlbe a league one side, not a premiership team. This manager is a joke.

That squad was good enough to get a result, its the idiot manager who is the problem.

Its about time we started to BOO this useless prat...never mind 2nd in the league, we will be nowehere near 2nd in four or five weeks time.

"Lets not panic"....well what else can we do...this awful run shows no signs of stopping and we are in freefall, make no mistake.

Boothroyd has shown he cannot arrest this slump. Unless action is taken and fast next season will see us go down.

King, Bouazza, Young all gone and what do we have to show?

This is disgusting and unacceptable...once more I have been proven right, so lets see what the clapper clones have got to say about yet another humiliation.

In nearly 40 years, I have never witness such inept rubbish, a total lack of desire and know how from both a set of player wearing the yellow and a manager totally devoid, it would appear of any idea on how to arrest this shambles. Just hope aidy can get the players he needs this week and a booking on a basic tactic and system course else he'll have to go along with Homer, enough is enough.

oh fukc off you idiot. stick to the point: FACT the manager has totally lost the plot and the dressing room.

Were it not for Adam Johnson we would be in serious trouble right now...next season we will be.

So c'mon Simpson, let us knwo what you make of this mess in your next set of programme notes.

Still if you were to sack Boothroyd I doubt very much if you'll appoint anyone of any worth....its only obscure yes men (business agents) that you're interested in.

You are the root cause of this mess my friend and you're alibi - top ten premiership status - is looking increasingly fragile.

Another crap performance and yet more excuses from Hoofroyd.
Aidy has been here long enough to have the players he wants playing the "style" of football he wants.Unfortunately neither is good enough.
There is no point in sacking him now but we shouldn't give him any more money to waste.
The fact that our players of promise haven't progressed sums up our problems.Aidy isn't a good coach. He motivated the team superbly the first 12 months but since then his severe limitations have been exposed.
The structure of the coaching setup needs a complete overhaul.
We won't be able to afford a Hoddle(he might be weird but his teams always tried to play football)but we can afford someone who isn't teaching from the Charles Hughes book of hoofball.Perhaps we could try a Gibbs/Taylor type of duo?

How thoroughly is Boothroyd preparing for these games?

That we keep getting so convincingly whacked at home suggests to me that the preparation for these games is not as it should be. Are we sending scouts etc to check up on the opposition before these games? Are we even aware of the kind of game plan the opposition will arrive with?

I made the point some time ago that all you here from Boothroyd is sentiments such as, "we've just got to focus on our own game".

Erhh, no. Maybe Man Utd could get away with that, but few other teams.

I bet you that if Boothroyd was asked to put his finger on why the team were successful two years ago he wouldn't be able to. And therein lies the problem.

Ben Foster was the difference over the last two seasons. Now he has gone we are getting regularly thumped, thus exposing Boothroyds team for the kind of lower division rubbish that they are.

Foster, Young, Bouazza, King, Spring, Chambers, Carlisle etc...all gone.

And what are we left with....Williamson, Francis, OToole, Doyley, Stewart, Jackson, Banguara, MacAnuff, Kabba, Ellington....total crap in other words.

Add to that the dreadful football he gets them to play then our current plight becomes very understandable.

Lets sack this useless manager right now. I'd love to see Kenny Jackett and Nigel Gibbs team up at the helm, with Luther coming back as first team coach.

Please, give us our club back Simpson...and fcuk off while you are doing it!

BOOTHROYD OUT BOOTHROYD OUT!!!!!

There were so many minuses about the game today.

Playing Mackay instead of Jackson says it all about the decision to sell Clarke Carlisle.

Priskin and Ellington as a front pairing. One goal between them in 18 months.

Kabba on the wing wearing red boots and looking more like cinderella, and playing like her too.

AB's refusal to play Rinaldi, but gives Bangura a full game even though he's had no match practice for nearly a year.

No game plan.

No game plan.

No game plan.

No tactics but get Demerit to hoof the ball long every time.

It was just awful to watch. Are you listening AB? IT WAS JUST AWFUL TO WATCH. The worst style (or lack of) that I can remember and I've been watching for the past 34 years.

If this carries on , no season ticket for me next year and thats a cert.

Did anyone else hear Aidy's pathetic non-committal brainless wimpish idiotic non-sensical diatribe on 3CR? It was suggested to him that recently the performances at home might not have all been absolutely birlliantly tip-top and magical. Aidy bursts into a flurry of excuses, one of which is "You won't hear me making excuses". Er?...

We would have more respect for him if he just said "Gee - that was WOEFUL. I'm really gonna have to raise my game." Instead he gives the impression that all is rosey in the cottage. What planet, Aidy?

He's young, he has good ability. But he can't cope when things go against him. He's got to learn and stop treating the fans like idiots and grow up.

He needs to get back to basics as he's making stupid, stupid decisions in team selection and he has wasted a huge sum on wages and transfer fees for players that can't even get in the reserves.

In particular, Priskin should be sacked: it must say somewhere in his contract that he must, if selected for a match, occasionally run around a little and at least give the impression of looking interested in the game and the result. If so, we have a cast iron case against him! I would call him a disgrace, but he would need to improve dramatically to reach the giddy heights of being a 'disgrace'.

Arghghghghgh!

We need a good winger before the end of the transfer window. I hear Swindon have a promising youngster called Macnamee....

Not one positive at all today. Talentless and overpaid the lot of them.

This is the slippery slope. We cant trust the manager to bring in any signings to turn the team around.

Looks like we are going to finish about 10th.

I sometimes wonder what game our manager watches cos his view of it was totally different to everyone elses in the ground.

I gave Prskin the benefit of the doubt but after today, he shouldnt play for us again. NE failed again to find the net.

MK must have seen the writing on the wall.

There are those of you that think the manager should go. Well, dream on. The manager will only go when the board go and this doesnt look likely.

A major shake up is needed but we wont get it!

Pi**ed off totally after today.

I sit almost right behind Boothroyd where he sits in the stand staring at his three TV monitors. All he ever spends the first half doing is writing copious notes. Why??? If he was a master tactician seriously making notes about the game and the way it is developing would we not see consistently better second half performances???

No! I will tell you why he makes notes... it is because he doesn't have a clue what he is doing and he thinks that making notes makes him look/feel important...!!!

He is a text book mamanger who thinks that reading lots of books, attending lots of courses...and making lots of notes will make him a good manager. Well, you are wrong Aidy. These things can all help but you have to be able to "feel" the game's heartbest and instinctively know when to change things and how to change things.

Other teams have worked out how to play us now and we do not have an answer. We just keep trying to play the same way...and I use the term "play" very loosely here!!!

Boothroyd has hit the buffers of his ability and if he stays there is only one way we are going from here...and it ain't upwards!!!

Abuse does no good whatsoever. What is needed is for those with some influence to somehow make the board realise that the style of football that the paying (note that word) public is having to put up with is no better than that that can be found on a Sunday morning park pitch.

Plan A in the first half consisted of winning free kicks around the half way line and getting DeMerit to lump the ball in the general direction of Mackay who was either offside or fouling his marker. There was no plan B. The second half was even more depressing as one realised that there was little point in a plan B as the players (Tommy Smith excepted when he came on) out there were totally incapable of passing the ball along the ground to each other so we might as well lump it and hope.

At half time I asked around me if anyone was happy with what they were seeing or could understand the managers tactics and not one person attempted to contradict me or could see what he was trying to do. If we, the paying (there's that word again) public can see that the tactics are a joke, then why can't the board? No one around me was prepared to defend Bothroyd.

Forget cries of bring in x or y but if you are unhappy as I am then make your case clearly and eloquently without recall to abuse (it does no good and only pushes heads further into the sand) by writing to the paper or the club and contacting 3CR. And remind them that we are the ones who pay their wages.

While I accept that I am out of step with current thinking and, therefore, likely to be in a minority with this view, given the choice I would have preferred to see Watford reach the FA Cup Final than get promoted this season - so, for me anyway, the team’s limp effort this afternoon was particularly depressing. For f**k’s sake, apparently Havant & Waterlooville weren’t carved apart like we were for the third and fourth goals!

A few points before I go away and try and rebuild my life…

Why was Malky allowed to trundle around the pitch looking like the world’s oldest man if Marriapa was fit? Of the two, surely Marriapa would have derived greater benefit from a game.

When is Boothroyd going to accept that Priskin cannot cut it at this level? There are players who look great every day in training but, when it comes to performing when it matters they fall apart. Poor Tamas clearly falls into this category. He reminds me in many ways of Dominic Foley who was highly rated by Graham Taylor but despite being given ample opportunity to prove himself, f***ed up every time he was given a run out. Before him, of course, there was Keith Cassells - obviously talented but just couldn’t make the step up to regular first teamer. In both cases, GT showed that he knew when to call time on a player. Will Boothroyd do the same?

Why did Rinaldi spend the afternoon getting splinters in his arse when Al Bangura was clearly completely off his game?

Trying hard to remain positive, but bloody hell….

No distraction from the FA Cup now.

The striker he wanted last year has now joined - and the apparently 'wantaway' King has indeed, got away.

He's been allowed to spend good money on a new defender.

We should have some more money to spend.

Heck, we even had a 12-point lead at one stage.

Everything has been in place this season to give us the very best opportunity to bounce straight back to the Premiership.

If we don't, there's only one person that can be blamed.

It's down to you now Boothroyd.

If you don't take us up this season, I doubt you ever will.

And while that may be a concern for us fans, it must be even more so for Ashton and Simpson, whose whole (crazy) 10-year, turning Watford in a top-10 profit-making club hinges on getting back up this time around.

Trouble is, us fans will still be here if we don't make it.

Wonder how many of the 'big three' will stay at Vicarage Road should the wheels have come off by May?

Perhaps AB thought no-one would turn up again if we made it to the semis, so we may as well forfeit today's game and cut the expenses. Credit where credit is due but I think after 3 months of this many other managers would have long been moved on by now - and it seems we are (in spite of our league position)in a very deep rut. The quality is awful and entertainment rates at less than zero. Even the better players for their supposed talent look like they'd struggle in a Sunday team. Perhaps a change is the best thing now. I'd vote for Ince or Coleman

Having suffered that utter dross today, I'm not going to upset myself again my saying too much.

But having paid good money to do so, I felt like leaving once the team was announced. What a slap in the face to the 10,000-odd Watford fans who handed over hard-earned cash to watch the dregs of our squad show how little strength in depth we truly have.

However, what alarmed me was tuning in to BBC3Counties before the game to hear the chairman say the fee for King was £3m, possibly rising to £4m depending on various things, such as Wigan staying up.

All those who slated the WO and suggested the story about King's knee and Fulham backing out was a load of rubbish - would you care to tell me, then, why the fee has dropped by as much as £2m?

King was worth £5m, now he could be worth as little as £3m. Either Wigan bargained the hell out of Watford, or there was some other reason why the player's value dropped so much, so fast? (like an injury problem).

By the time we've paid Forest their share and bought Sadler, we'll barely have enough left to pay Collins John's wages until May.

But hey, we're still playing well and heading for promotion eh?!

Come on everyone, clap clap clap.

I've been watching football for years, and it just never dawned on me until today that putting out half a team and getting dicked 4-1 at home in the FA Cup was indeed the best way to get our faltering promotion bid back on track.

No wonder all you happy clappers keep telling us he's the best young manager in the country.

He's certainly adopting an approach that's new, I'll give you that much.

What a dreadful day. We need a few stars pronto, players with pedigree. The purchases who are untried and are to be moulded does not work.Anyway time is not on our side.

How can anyone stick up for Hoofroyd after the abysmal home performances of this season. Winning 1 Game in the last 10 is just not good enough.
Those people who still try to chant his name obviously dont know anything about football or tactics.
Unbelievably some idiots behind me started to chant his name after we had scored our consolation goal, had they been asleep for the previous hour and not noticed how dominant Wolves were.
Wolves looked a poor side to me so what does that make us?
Time for a change before we slide any further, both Manager and Chairman.

Richard - just a couple of points.

Today's weakened side contained players signed by Boothroyd. He has got us to a point where one or two injuries and we'll be fielding a side filled with this lot more often.

When we were beaten at home by QPR, or Plymouth, or Bristol City, or Burnley, or when we lost at Preston, or when we scraped a last-gasp draw with Cardiff, were we fielding a weakened side then too?

Are truly, in your heart of hearts, when you got up this morning and thought about today's game did at any point you think that a 4-1 whipping of any Watford team, weakened or otherwise, would be just what the doctor ordered?

Obviously Boothroyd was happy to take that risk - why else bring people in from the frozen wastes of the Reserves?

I don't care who played, how weak the team may have been, and even if they never play for us again.

They wore the yellow of Watford, our club.

That might not mean much to them, or to the manager, but I really cannot tolerate rank bad football and grim results like this - and have people tell me to get over it and get behind the team.

I've been getting behind them every week for the last three months, and we're getting worse, not better.

Since we signed Mr Ellington for £3.5 thing's have gone bad. First he goes on Hunger strike for 40 day's and 40 night's for £15grand approx a week which would even give ALLAH the hump if he was manager! our man of experience Keith Burkinshaw who has taught Mr Moonball all he know's has left on compasionate grounds, and our old head Gav who we all know as a very average player going has taken all our experience away. We have sold our 3 quickest players in young, bouazza, king who are the only players in WFC with any sort of pace.
We are now a team who everyone want's to play, let's face it a team who throw's their centre half up-front for the most of the game's (Prior to Africa!)tell's you there are no tactician's within the team. Selling our best player's doesn't tell us we are even a slightest bit interested in being a steady Premiership Club.

Why did Rinaldi spend the afternoon getting splinters in his arse when Al Bangura was clearly completely off his game?

When a player has been injured for a while, he needs a few games to get back into it again. While clearly many people disagree with Aidy's priority of aiming for promotion over a cup run, that is what he was doing today - giving some of the B-team some much needed match time. How will they get better if they only ever play in the reserves?

And anyway, why did we put in so much effort to keep Al from going back to Africa if he's not going to get a match?

As Aidy said after the match, a defeat like that is a kick up the backside - didn't we have a good run after getting stuffed by Leicester?

Sure, it's frustrating at the moment, but we're still second, the window is still open, and there are plenty of matches left. I'll wait until the end of the season to see what happens; it could still go either way.

Suffered todays game in amazement.Priskin can be a good player but not as a target man. Kabba was OK going forward on the wing but no help at all defensively. To sub Priskin and Kabba in the middle was nonsense. Rinaldi is our best midfield player who is fit yet he was still on the bench!
McAnuff did some good work in the first half but disappeared in the second. Why persist in two wide players when neither centreforward can win headers??
For some other posters Ainsworth was cuptied.Mackay was slow two years ago and is now not able to use his experience to make up for that.
Aidy made some basic tactical mistakes today and must sort himself out for future games.

No farce of a semi final draw like last year which ensured the elite would 'grace' the new Wembley. How is it that i paid a small fortune out of duty only to go to a semi final last year without any feeling of excitement? 20 years ago Watford in the semis was something that wouldn't get out of your head for weeks leading up to it. 16 years ago was the last final that didn't include one of the boring 4. I could name all the winners up to then and remember the games, after that..nothing. bet i am watching the grass grow again on cup final day 2008. Weep not fellow Hornets.

So Aidy 'responds' to the "unhappy boo-ers" demands to make changes & we get stuffed 1-4 & they still moan; seems to show the level of their intentions is to hound-out a manager proven by results & level of League achievement to be the 2nd most successful in our history as an edge of London breeding ground for other clubs.
Contrary to some of the posts, I hear that Aidy has not lost the dressing room but there has been a huge sigh of relief that Maroln's situation is finally resolved. Yes, he was a great playuer - but pls remember we paid just £500k for him. i'd have loved £8-10 million but that's not realistic for a 28 year old with just 15 months left on a contract.
Re the game; loosing 1-4 hurts like hell & the performance was poor overall - but what do you expect in a team with 6 changes?
As for this carp above about playing Mart Poom in goal, Richard Lee's been probably out most consistent performer in recent weeks & I'd suggest he is better than Poom.
Tin hat & flame-retardant suit on but I thought Steve Kabba played pretty well considering he's a centre forward not a winger.
The area I do agree we need something done in is centre-mid; we have lots of huff & puff but no creativity and whichever pair starts seem to play across the pitch so there's no holding player to help defend & no-one joining the attack.
Credit to Wolves, the early 1st goal (& it was a superb finish by Keogh) settled them down and meant they could dictate play. Their 2nd was a break-away while we were pressing for an equlaiser; hence the comment re center-mid above.
Call s for Aidy out are NOT going to help change things; there are no other alternatives. Billy davies spent the first 4 months of the seaosn prooving he's a great Championship mgr but can't make it in the Prem - he's more "experienced" that Aidy and had time to build the Derby team he took up last season. Chris Coleman did OK with Fulham but again, the fans forced him out, Sanchez came in & now he's been replaced by Hodgson that took a successful Blackburn side to the bottom of the Prem & resigned before he was sacked.
Guess the point I'm making is yesterday brought hoime to me that the team of the last two seasons has changed so we're now re-building again with new players. Hopefully, that wil lead to some more football being played as we move forward over time.
And for the "unhappy boo-ers" out there; try getting behind the team during the game & be more constructive in your criticism. I bet you don't have thousands of people telling you how to do your job...

Remember where we are and who we are, thats not a top prem club for any one who hasnt worked it out ..... oh and i am loving the fact that Colin is getting more and more abusive and personal, not only does it weaken his opinion it also means he is upset, annoyed, frustrated and he cant do owt about it,,,and that is just great !!!!.. you can all moan about what i say but the fact is I am the happy one at the end of the day, its only football and i can remember far worst times at WFC !!!! bye bye all from mr Happy and contented ..
An interesting view, the type of supporter that will be relied on should Watford decide to sell more players in the future.

Thinking that Boothroyd is one of the top young English managers is why there are so many foreign managers in our leagues.Poor Aidy hasn't got a clue about football, although he is able to give out good sound bites but that doesn't give one the brains to evolve tactics. It is not his fault that he has been promoted beyond his competance.Give him a job as our PR man and get some-one in who can lift the team.Poor Aidy has had a charisma bye pass and is out of his depth as a leader of men.

This season I've seen us concede more goals at home to Championship strikers than I did in the whole of last year when the defence was up against some of the best strikers on the planet.

The word 'backwards' doesn't do justice to the situtaion.

If Aidy turns it around from here he realliy is a football genius.

Sadly, I fear he's a lucky buffoon, and will not be here in the summer.

Just be thankful that we will be in the Premier next year,no doubt. What do the Watford fans want pretty football. They wouldn't know it if it kicked them in the face. They have been nurtued on plenty of wellie over the years and have never appreciated skillful football. This is why any footballer with any nous can't wait to jump ship.Be happy to get results that take us to promotion and the dosh that generates.

I have to agree with most Watford supporters in that Aidy Boothroyd needs to go. If results don't improve in the next 2 weeks then he has to go. I never thought I'd say this about AB but he is tactically hopeless. We don't play football any more and I don't blame the players as they're only as good as the management they receive, and it's obviously not very good at all.

I make 300 mile round trips to The Vic and will not do so again until the board and the manager are sorted out. I refuse to pay good money to watch this drivel and AB is so 'positive' that he cannot see what's wrong with the club and with himself.

The Board need to get this sorted out now BEFORE it's too late.

So why are there so many negative posts...other than because of dire, clueless tactics on the pitch. I reckon many older supporters find this regime quite simply unpleasant and a betrayal of the club heritage. In Aidy's column he simply questions whether another top 2 side would have negative coverage by it's local paper. He appears to simply think it must be wrong, rather than to question the causes. The spin? The treatment of Gibbsy and Chris Cummins and many more. Closing message Boards and threatening legal action against dissenters. Directors pay, etc etc. There are many supporters who cannot accept this type of leadership. Until that is understood the criticism will continue. Carry on the good work KA and the WO.

We succumbed to four goals but in reality it could have been more. Our defence was disorganised and split apart for the second, third and fourth goal by a team that could pass the ball accurately on the ground; something we seemingly cannot do. Their first goal was a well taken lob following a defensive mistake (Malky).
By contrast, we pumped the ball up in the air to Priskin who is never going to win ariel challenges - he didn't have one shot at goal. If Priskin has any ability it is running at defences with the ball on the ground. Only once did he get tha opportunity. Ellington showed some real quality at times - when he got the ball, but rarely was it passed directly to him.
The manager has blamed the players but they are told to play a particular style, which inevitaby means long punts forwards. Richard Lee did not throw the ball out once yesterday. On every occasion he waited until every Wolves player was in position facing the ball. No wonder its not possible to get a passing game going or keep possession.
This style of play is entirely down to the manager not the players. That's why he can't tell us in his post match interviews what has gone wrong and that's why he has to blame (un-named players) to distract from his own inability to develop a style of play that suits the game and the players selected.
In the early part of the season its been the exceptional efforts of individual players that has got us results - most notably Johnson. I don't know what the solution is but the management team have to take responsibility for this awful run

we realy havegone backwards the last 3 months.
we need a decent midfield player. when was the last time watford had a midfield player that was being linked to bigger/better clubs.
we have had goal keepers, defenders, forwards sold for big money. cannot remember 1 central midfieldplayer. we need one now...

Darren in Canada: only at your sort of trans-Atlantic range could Betty Bullsh*t's approach to yesterday possibly be construed as "the right call".

On Friday, he was on the FA website saying how much he valued the traditions of the FA Cup … having already decided, presumably, to play a de facto reserve side the following day.

“The right call”? No way. It was an insult to anyone who paid to go. End of.

All I can assume, Darren, is that the long, dark Canadian winter is playing havoc with your powers of reasoning and recall.

Cliff in Oxford: Coleman wasn't sacked from his job in Spain -- he resigned because of differences with the club's new owner. The consensus was that he was starting to do a very good job there. Moreover, the Fulham fans I know around here wish they'd kept him, in retrospect.

I still hope Betty turns it around and that we come out fired up at Bramall Lane and then again next Saturday. No wins in either game, though, and the momentum of our downhill slide will definitely start to appear unstoppable. :(

We all have problems with Boothroyd's selections but the worry for me is the loss of both Burkinshaw and, believe it or not, Bassett in the back room to offer experienced assistance. Add to that the chief scout going and you have an inexperienced management team in Boothroyd and particularly MacKay making decisions
about tactics - who watches opposing teams?

I may apply to scout potential recruits in the short term - look over the hedge to Arsenals hungry kids -surely we must have some communication with the neighbours?

I think it's a disgrace when clubs field deliberately weakened sides in any competition they enter - especially the FA Cup.

We have a good record in the Cup, certainly in my experience from the late 60's to now. During this time Cup runs have been a notable feature of WFC's history, and are among my most cherished WFC-related memories.

A manager can often take (justifiable) refuge behind the argument that once the players cross the white line, it's largely down to them. However, Saturday's debacle was at least partly down to the manager's eccentric selection. I am trying to choose my words carefully, but I strongly believe this disrespected the competition, the Club's history, and the supporters.

I'm sure my view is going to be seen and read as the ramblings of an old and out of touch supporter. And I know the Cup has been endlessly frigged around with by various influences in recent years, but I had hoped WFC would have been above that.
