Hornets frustrated in stalemate

WATFORD have slipped to third in the Championship after their attempts to go back to the top were thwarted by a resolute Preston North End, who held out for a 0-0 draw at Vicarage Road this afternoon (Saturday).

The Hornets dominated the attacking exchanges, but although Darius Henderson hit the side-netting instead of a near open goal from a tight angle and Dan Shittu headed against a post they were unable to force a winner.

Aidy Boothroyd, as expected, made just the one change following the comeback 2-2 draw at Charlton Athletic last time out, with John-Joe O'Toole replacing Al Bangura, who failed to make the bench. Jay DeMerit was fit to return following his four-match absence but had to settle for a place among the replacements. They also featured Jordan Stewart and Steve Kabba, both of whom missed the trip to The Valley with knocks.

Preston boss Alan Irvine also made just the one adjustment to the side that performed so well against Portsmouth in the FA Cup last weekend, with Richard Chaplow replacing the suspended Darren Carter.

The Hornets were straight on the front foot from the kick-off, with Leigh Bromby having a few early opportunities to use his long throw. But it was the visitors who had the first attempt in the seventh minute when Simon Whaley saw a shot blocked after Chaplow had surged infield.

But Watford really should have gone in front less than 60 seconds later when Jobi McAnuff played a superb give-and-go down the left with Nathan Ellington before driving forward and infield and then sliding in Henderson to his left. The big striker drew Andy Lonergan and appeared to have done the hard work after rounding the keeper, only to blast into the side-netting from a relatively tight angle on the left-side of the six-yard box.

However, it was the home side's turn to survive a scare five minutes later when, following a free-kick, the ball was rolled inside to Paul McKenna, who let fly from fully 25 yards and Richard Lee was beaten as he watched the ball rebound out off the angle of post and bar. Watford immediately countered though, with McAnuff leading the charge before playing in Ellington, who fired over the top with a left-footed effort from 12 yards.

The Hornets were on the attack again soon after with Tommy Smith doing well to beat two men down the right side of the area before standing up a cross that was, in truth, a touch too deep. But the on-song McAnuff kept the ball alive on the right side of the area before firing in a low shot which Lonergan did well to turn behind at his near post.

Next, Henderson headed down and into the Preston keeper's arms following an Adrian Mariappa cross, and then Lonergan was forced to tip over a Smith cross that was threatening to drop beneath his bar.

The home side had another promising opening in the 31st minute when Henderson was tugged down by Liam Chilvers near the edge of the area, but Ellington could only find the wall with his disappointing set-piece. Then, following the Hornets' fifth corner of the opening half, John Eustace saw an effort blocked at close range.

Ellington spurned another free-kick from a good position after 37 minutes as the Watford bombardment continued, and three minutes before the break a smartly-taken set-piece was rolled down the side of the wall to Smith, who sought to pick out Henderson with the cut-back, but Lonergan was able to intercept.

Callum Davidson received the game's first yellow card a minute later for a scything challenge on Mariappa, but despite dominating Watford had to settle for a 0-0 scoreline at the break.

The second period got off to a rather flat start from the Hornets' perspective, although that threatened to change five minutes in when Smith did well to drive between two challenges before finding Ellington, whose effort from the edge of the area was deflected over.

Boothroyd's troops continued to remain well in charge without particularly threatening, before Whaley mustered the visitors' first on-target effort of the afternoon on the hour, although Lee was never troubled by the right-footed effort.

But how Watford didn't go in front after 61 minutes was anyone's guess. Following a McAnuff inswinging corner from the left, Shittu headed down and off the far post and the ball looped back across the goalline, over Lonergan and Smith, and Chris Sedgwick managed to head clear.

Still the chances kept coming and going, with Shittu flicking on a long Bromby throw from the right but a combination of Ellington and McAnuff were unable to get the required touch. Next, McAnuff did very well to get away from two challenges down the left before pulling the ball back to O'Toole, but he fired over from the edge of the area.

It was the Preston manager who was the first to play his hand after 72 minutes, bringing on Neil Mellor for Karl Hawley, and the visitors then enjoyed their best offensive spell of the second period, although the best they could muster was a couple of useful crosses.

But the Watford boss was convinced his side should have had a penalty after 77 minutes when Smith was bundled over in the area, although his attention soon switched to the other end when Chaplow was given a second bite after a McKenna shot was blocked and his left-footed effort was deflected narrowly wide.

Next, Lee had to go to ground to save a Chris Brown toe-poke, before DeMerit was introduced to the action at the expense of Mariappa after 81 minutes.

Sean St Ledger then came on for Whaley, before Lionel Ainsworth replaced Smith, and the home side thought they'd won it in the last minute of normal time when Henderson teed up Ellington, and his shot was bundled in after it rebounded out off the far post, but the assistant's flag had long since been raised.

The Hornets laid siege to the opposition goal towards the end of four minutes of injury-time, but the closest they came was when Lonergan dived to his left to keep out a Shittu header.

I make us third now not second. It sounds like we gave it a go but that has to be two points dropped today, especially as West Brom lost again. Still a long way to go and good to hear that Jobi had another good game...

bloody preston..thats four points they've taken off us. Couldnt make it today but sounds like an honest effort...a massive improvement on some of the limp home displays before the new signings arrived.

I'm sure sage and oinion boy will have plenty to bicker about in his own tediously predictable way.

We could (& maybe should) have been 4-0 up by half time but it was just one of those days. Will be interested to see the stats - PNE were hardly in our half in the first 45 mins. No faulting the commitment & if we keep up this form we should still make automatic place, although Bristol City away will be a huge game.

86 points is a reasonable benchmark from past seasons for an automatic slot. At least 8 wins from 12 needed with 6 of the top 9 to play. No-one else has that ratio - leave now if you are of a nervous disposition and get ready for the ride!! Come on!!!

I think following todays performance Mr. Boothroyd's motivations need to be questioned. For the most of the first half we were far too good for Preston, Tommy W, Jobi M & Matt S in particular enjoying great success & very nearly opening up a very stubborn defence. Our defence looked very comfortable even with the usual Shittu clumsiness and Poor distribution from Mariapa. Despite enjoying by far the most possesion and creating all the chances Nathan E proved to be nothing more than a passenger. As the second half started it became clear that more & more of our attacking efforts were being frustrated by lack of real pace. I thought an ideal opportunity to bring Steve Kabba on to replace Ellington. This would give a real chance to trun their defence & create some uncertainty. I continued to watch the Technical area to see if there was the slightest glimmer of recognition, hopefully the penny would drop. Seventy Five minute in Jay D replaces Marriapa, what the hell is this all about, Preston were causing us no problems at all!!
I can only assume that Aidy B will go all out to justify the ridiculously high fee paid for Nathan E, even at the expense of important points in our push for promotion.

Oh My. You are a silly old Hector aren't you !

Nearly snuck it at the end. Just wasn't our day and we should have had a pen for a clear push on TS.

You get games like this. the performance was good and we have momentum and continue to impress away. Nothing to worry about guys!

It was one of those games hornetboy, you are right.
To not do anything to try & change it however was criminal, particularly when the problem is staring you in the face.

By "nearly snuck it" I assume you are thinking about the chance where Ellington was given a gilt-edged chance, on a plate, & managed to shovel it hopelessly against the post, my next door neighbour KIKI could have scored it!!!

Anyone who was at the game today must have been as frustrated as I was today with Ellington.I dont see Ellington being any better than Priskin!. NE was appalling today. Think we will have to put our hope on Collins John helping out with the goals.

ellington worries me. i want him to do well, i want to be positive. but. its like you have purchased an overpriced expensive car, only to find out its a write off. you cant sell it, it has little value to anyone, you could only sell it on for a massive loss. so you feel you have to keep it and use it every dayto justify the outlay. he does not look a 3.5 million pound player. no where near. what do we do.

I have had enough of all of the fans in the lower rous shouting abuse at Nathan Ellington for not "fighting" for a "pass" which is designed for a person twice his size. Being a few inches shorter than 6ft how is he expected to compete with 6ft+ defenders with balls that are not passed to him but purely aimed in his direction. He is a decent player who has shown us that he has very good close control, passes to his own team, has a very powerful/accurate shot and actually passes to his own team. Give the ball to him at to feet in and around the penalty area and he'll prove to us that he is worth being patient with. And, yes I know he missed two extremely good chances that could have won us the game but I seem to remember a certain bleach-blonde heroe missing an open goal in the first half, not the mention his season on misses last season. I know that will upset the thousands of Henderson deciples but when he plays he encourages us to play the long ball that the same people who love him hate to see. Kabba has done nothing wrong and I feel sorry for him for being left out after playing well. He and Ellington seemed to be developing a promising partnership together up front and were playing some encouraging football compared to the long ball that we all hate.
Henderson and Ellington are completely different players and have shown that they do not play well together. We fans are obviously lovers of football being played on the ground and if Henderson contiues to play then the long ball will continue and Ellington will continue to recieve balls that are not worth attempting to win.
I think that Henderson has and will continue to be an asset to the team and would be the perfect substitute to have and bring on towards the end of a game and could possibly win us games through doing this.
I'm sorry if I have offended anyone by talking positively of Nathan Ellington and I look forward to hearing your views and opinions and recieving your thoughts/abuse.

Interesting views on NE. I can see both sides and therefore feel like that bloke from the Fast Show. I too saw the sublime pass but think if some of Hendo's passion rubbed off on him, NE would be a better Watford player. Players have to adapt to the team as well as the team adapting to them.

I was very happy with the passing game i saw today and we were a little unlucky only to take 1 point but obviously possession and "chances" don't win games.

I was also surprised with the substitution and the decision not to bring on Kabba. He has showed some heart recently and would have mixed it up.

What p***ed me off today was that there was some booing from some (middle) sections of the rookery. WTF is that about? The team played well and those "fans" didn't join in with a chant or song for 90 minutes.

Just about every column in the programme talked about the importance of the fans (apropos Leicester) and yet it's just the front and back rows of the Rookery most games. The Golden Boys are doing well and the Yellow Army should be cheering them on.

This was a game we would have lost a month ago so things have improved.
We didn't play great and credit to Preston for defending resolutely
The major deficiency in the team was exposed by our lack of creativity. We huffed and puffed but didn't have that little extra you need on occasions like this.
All in all a missed opportunity but a point is progress.

As a striker i thought he looked overweight, lethargic, weak, lacke
d control and desire.to you that say we should look at the whole picture and to watch his movement off the ball, making spaces for his strike partners etc.ect.. thats 'cobblers'you are looking through yellow tinted Burka's .he hasn't had a good game since he's debut.A forward that cost that much should have more to his game than to"make spaces"..to have him on the pitch for 90mins was an insult to the bench...oh yes he also can't take free kick's.....I also thought Ellington had a poor game too!!

Professor Plum, The Billiard Room says...

Ellington was poor yesterday. Thought we might have taken him off, brought Jay on at the back and put Danny S up front with 20 to go. Couldn’t see the point of swapping Mariappa for Demerit - no doubt Sage will be able to explain all.

Very frustrating but the truth is on another day we would have won comfortably. That’s showbiz.

On the plus side, I never felt that Preston were likely to nick it – unlike earlier in the season when, as we huffed and puffed in an attempt to break teams down, we always looked likely to get caught with a sucker punch – and usually did.

If I believed being positive about NE would improve his performance I would be. Maybe he will come into his own in the Prem, I belive Hamuer Bouazza was similar in that respect.

My point is that in our position leadership is going to be key to our success. No one could accuse NE of playing anything like well.

In particular Tommy S, Jobi M, Matt S, Darius H, have all made significant contributions over the last few weeks. In an attempt to maintain this momentum & their enthusiam it is the responsibility of the leader to recognise issues and address them!!

Ellington might have had a handful of good passes, but generally his touch was very poor yesterday. And I'm not talking about passes above him, but those that were to his feet.

He also didn't chase down the ball and backed out of challenges too many times, which is the last thing fans want to see, especially from who must be the highest earner on the pitch.

I wanted him to be great but I think we can see why WBA dumped him.

Colin as usual cannot get from st albans to the vic, whilst i drive 100 miles e/w-y do i care what the fool thinks?

It was as I suspected-PNE ARE a bogy side & they shut us down very well in second half-yes we did ok & deserved to win but having agreed that NE is improving recently ,i cannot defend his second half holiday when he showed very little interest--talent without application = priskin! ( formuls for failure) to leave Hendo out is a strange suggestion i feel.

JJ brilliant first half but PNE denied us midfield space in second half & he struggled-tommy shut out of game as at charlton(mostly) teams know he is main supply-not a bad perf by team but hope CJ gets fit as NE is not reliable-lacks pace currently & anticipation is v poor-decent first half but after that!

i think aidy kept him on as he can nick a goal but i would have replaced him with SK for last 15.

We had the chances but lacked a clinical finisher ( no I don't want MK back - he'd lost desire and some of his pace). It's always tough against a spoiling team who try to bully us throughout !
We don't seem to create enough space to exploit - this requires running off the ball, particularly by NE. When two or three are closing out JM or TS or two are marking DH - one in front and one behind (every team does this at the Vic) there should be space to exploit.

This has become a debate about Ellington, and it is true that after a good first half he faded and made few contributions. Maybe Kabba would have added more energy late in the second half, but I could see the logic of bringing on Demerit, who has often scored from setplays. It was annoying not to win this one, since we were by far the better team, made a load of chances and could have had two penalties . The team seens to be coming together at the right time, and with games still to come against the three others chasing automatic promotion, it is in our own hands. Let us hope they do not come back from Dubai with food poioning, sunstroke or jet-lag.

There really was nothing wrong that 1)a fraction more composure in front of goal (numerous times by numerous players) -2) a proper flick in a goal mouth scramble (Smith, hendo, JJ, Ellington)3) a pen ! (Smith - stay down ! I was sure he was about to blow) ...4) a 1/4 inch off the post (enough to spin the ball into the goal rather than back across the goal (THAT is really unlucky!)
wouldnt have changed. And I'd still need to be convinced that Shittu was offside ! -If Ellington wasnt for his shot - how could Shittu be on the rebound as he started behind him! ... will watch BL2 with interest!!

DeMerit substitution ensured Bromby was further upfield for quick long thros to put pressure on and also we could switch to a back 3 (Bromby/DeMerit/Sadl
er) if we were able to leave Shittu up. Even then it was a superb last gasp save from their keeper to deny Shittu! -

At bith Charlton 2nd half and today .. i saw enough to be assured we will spank some team very soon. Add CJ to the mix as an option and AJ coming back on loan (inevitable now/ even if homesick rumours true) - then we will be in the frame.

lets hope Preston do us a favour on Tuesday to even things up!

Have read the comments re Ellington etc and wonder whether I was at the same game.

I thought McAnuff had a good game..Richard Lee only made a couple of minor mistakes and the rest were below par.

Shittu after one of our corners ambled back and was actually the last player in yellow to cross over the half way line despite PNE being on the attack.

Another day we may have romped that game but i thought we got what we deserved a point. The team were relaxed, maybe in holiday mood..certainly not looking to avenge a defeat..but there is good news. They have no escape from Aidy for 4 days and they need to do a little self evaluation. As for our crowd plenty of spaces to fill but the crowd got behind the team at times but not as good as Leicester but then the players effort against Leicester was somewhat more deserving than the latest effort.
