Inspector retires after long service

Hertfordshire police said goodbye to an award-winning detective inspector this week after 30 years of service.

David Laming, 49, who has lived in the county all his life, spent his last working years at the constabulary's headquarters in Welwyn Garden City in the Forensics Investigation department.

He's previously worked in the Crime Reduction unit and Area Crime units based at Hertford and Stevenage.

Over his three decades of policing David has received commendation for investigating murders, armed robberies and serious sexual abuse networks both with the Metropolitan Police Service and Hertfordshire Constabulary.

He said: "It has been a real privilege working alongside colleagues with such integrity and commitment.

"The challenges have often seemed insurmountable but I never ceased to be amazed at what could be achieved when we all pulled together and the feeling of deep mutual satisfaction from our achievements.

"I will miss the teamwork and the Can Do' people very much."

He plans to continue volunteer work with the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust and possibly further nature work abroad.

David and his wife, Sharon Laming, who is also a Hertfordshire police officer, are keen mountaineers and have climbed Mount Kilamanjaro, Mount Kenya, Mount Kinabalu and many other Pyrenean and Alpine summits together.

They were only the second couple in Europe to complete a dugout canoe traverse of the Okavango Delta wilderness area in Botswana, Africa.

David said: "It was just us and four local tribesmen in a stunning wild landscape surrounded by elephants, hippos, lions, leopards and much more.

"Fishing for supper and cooking over a bushfire whilst camping on one of thousands of unnamed islands. It was an incredible and unforgettable privilege."
