Student suffered heart attack

THE family of a student who died suddenly the day after celebrating his outstanding exam results have paid tribute to their "loving and helpful" son.

Hassan Shahid, was just 23, and in his second year at the University of Hertfordshire doing a business degree when he suffered a fatal heart attack in his student digs on Richard Street, Hatfield.

The international student from Pakistan had been out celebrating his end of term exam results the night before his tragic death.

His brother, Mustafa Shahid, who tried to give Hassan CPR after discovering him in his bedroom on the afternoon of September 9, 2007 told an inquest today that Hassan had been drinking the night before the heart attack. But blood tests revealed alcohol or drugs had not led to the heart attack.

A pathologist confirmed a pancreatic infection had led to septicemia and bad circulation problems causing failure of vital organs.

Mustafa, 26, who was also studying at the University of Hertfordshire said: "He was very social, very lovely but dominant. Hassan believed in helping others and did a lot of charity work."

Corner Edward Thomas said Hassan's family and the paramedics had done everything right but due to the extent of the pancreatitis nothing more could be done to save him.

Hassan's family had travelled from Pakistan to be at the inquest and will be returning on July 16.
