Two scout leaders from Borehamwood have been presented with the second highest award for scouting.

Husband and wife Len and Carol Denbigh were given the Silver Acorn at the Hertfordshire Scouts' annual general meeting in County Hall, in Hertford, on Monday last week.

The accolade, which recognises the dedication and long service of scouting volunteers and leaders, was presented by the county commissioner Ivor Thomas.

Speaking after the meeting Mrs Denbigh said: "Len has been involved in scouting since he was nine and he is 59 now. I have been for about 38 years. It is quite unique to get two people from the same family get the same award at the same time.

"But as we do different things in the scouts it is nice that we were recognised as individuals as well."

The Silver Acorn is worn on an orange ribbon around the neck of the recipient and is awarded for specially distinguished service for a period of no less than twenty years.

Mrs Denbigh added: "It is an honour I am proud to wear my uniform any way but this is something extra to be proud of."

Melvyn Teare, county manager for Hertfordshire Scouts, said: "Over a long period of time Carol and Len have contributed a lot to the local community of scouting and have helped a significant amount of young people take part in outdoor scouting activities.

"It is important to recognise leaders and volunteers who set an example for young people and other volunteers and leaders in the area."
