Potters Bar station refurbishment plans given the go-ahead

A £400,000 project to revamp the forecourt of Potters Bar train station has been approved.

The work will improve access for buses, taxis and pedestrians and provide dedicated cycle parking. the work will take 20 weeks to complete and will start next month.

The project should cost £400,000 but will be partly funded by the Depart-ment for Transport’s (DfT) Access for All fund, which will contribute £150,000.

The scheme is a joint venture between the DfT, Hertfordshire County Council, Hertsmere Bor-ough Council and First Capital Connect who have been planning the improvements for the last 12 months.

However, commuters will have to endure some inconvenience while the works are taking place, as the forecourt will be closed to all vehicles.

While pedestrian acc-ess will still be available, cars and taxis will be diverted to the rear station car park and new temporary bus stops will be erected.

The scheme will offer new lighting and a ‘kiss and ride’ parking area, for dropping off friends and family members, as well as promising to improve the appearance of the area.

County councillor Stuart Pile said: “This is an important scheme for Potters Bar as it will not only improve vehicle movements but also bring a more attractive, safe and accessible environment for all station users.

“We realise that it will bring some inconvenience for the community in the early stages of the project but by December the town will have a new gateway to be proud of.”
