Hendon road crash victim named

The victim of a hit and run in Hendon on Monday has been named by police.

Wayne Sweeney, 26, of Dunstable, was killed when his red Volkswagen van was in collision with a black Range Rover as he turned onto the A1 north bound from the A406.

Police were called to the incident at about 3.25am and London Ambulance attended, but Mr Sweeny was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post mortem carried out on Tuesday gave the cause of death as a head injury. A police spokesman said next of kin have been informed.

An inquest opened and adjourned at Hornsey Coroners Court today.

The spokesman added a second car stopped at the crash, removed the driver of the Range Rover and took him from the scene. He appealed for any witnesses or people with information to come forward to investigators.

The Collision Investigation Unit at Alperton Traffic Garage is leading the inquiry and anyone who can assist should contact the dedicated witness line on 020 8998 5319 or call anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Two men, both aged 21, were arrested on Monday at a north London hospital in connection with the incident.

One of the men remained in hospital until his release into police custody yesterday and was bailed to return in February 2009, pending further inquiries.

The other man was taken to a north London police station and bailed to return in March 2009 pending further inquiries.
