A racist schoolboy has been handed a five year antisocial behaviour order (Asbo) after aiming a torrent of abuse at a Jewish pupil.
The 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, racially attacked and threatened the 17-year-old boy from the Jewss' Free School as they travelled home from school on the 183 bus last November.
The bus was in the West Hendon area when he got on with a group of friends and targeted the Jewish pupils already on board.
The teenager, from Kingsbury, was arrested by Barnet Police and last month admitted charges of racially aggravated harassment, alarm and distress as well as common assault at Hendon Magistrates’ Court.
The boy was convicted last Tuesday and handed the Asbo by magistrates at Hendon.
Included in the terms of the order, the boy is prohibited from using words, behaviour or gestures that are racist, threatening, offensive, rude, indecent or obscene in any public place.
This includes whilst travelling on any recognisable form of public transport, within the London Borough of Barnet, the magistrate concluded.
He is also restricted from travelling on any public bus on the 183 route between 3pm and 6pm.
Safer transport team (STT) Inspector Dave Lobb said: “This young man targeted schoolchildren and residents but was brought to justice thanks to the resolve of the communities he abused and their partnership with the police.
“The court’s rulings are clear. Those who try to intimidate or bring about fear will not be tolerated.”
Anyone who has suffered racial abuse while on the borough’s transport links should call the STT on 020 8721 2243 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
