GREEN fingered volunteers found more than they bargained for while tidying up a Hendon park last weekend - a collection of rare coins.
Deputy council leader Matthew Offord and a team of residents were undertaking a spring clean of Brent Park on Sunday when they made the discovery.
The team had been collecting litter and cutting back hedges around the park's former Victorian boating lake when they discovered a dirty old suitcase containing the haul.
It included French Francs, Commonwealth Games coins and a large number of Hanukkah gelts, along with several books on coin collecting.
"I've cleaned them up because I wanted to see exactly what they were," said Mr Offord. "It's quite possible they were part of a burglary and had been dumped there."
Mr Offord has handed the coins in to Barnet Police. If the coins belong to you, contact the Times Series on 020 8359 5935.
