School governors thanked for hard work

SCHOOL governors will be thanked at an evening of celebration in Barnet this week.

More than 100 governors have been invited to North London Business Park, in Oakleigh Road South, Whetstone, on Wednesday, as part of Barnet Celebrates Achievement week.

The event will include screenings of film projects made by pupils, dance acts, and performances by the East Barnet Music Centre Jazz Ensemble and Moss Hall Junior School Choir.

The evening will be hosted by Barnet councillor Fiona Bulmer, cabinet member for education, and attended by Barnet chief executive Nick Walkley and Mayor of Barnet Brian Coleman.

The achievement week will also be marked by events in 40 schools, ranging from art displays to maths and sports festivals.

Ms Bulmer said: "We have a huge amount of talent within our schools and I'm delighted we are highlighting and celebrating these talents.

"Parents, teachers and the pupils themselves work incredibly hard to achieve these results, but governors too play a vital role in the success of their schools, and the evening will be our way of thanking them for their contribution."

In last year's Key Stage 2 tests for pupils aged 11, 84 per cent of pupils in Barnet achieved Level 4+ — the eighth best in the country.

Nearly two-thirds of GCSE students gained five or more A* to C grades, including English and maths, compared with 47.6 per cent nationally.
