CCTV cameras look set to be installed in Temple Fortune this year after a spate of crimes prompted more than 1,000 residents to sign a petition calling for them.

Plans to install the cameras in Finchley Road are expected to be approved at a meeting of Barnet Council's cabinet tonight.

In the last six months of last year there were 100 crimes reported in Temple Fortune and a report to the cabinet acknowledges “a significant public concern regarding street crime in Temple Fortune and the associated lack of public space CCTV”.

In November last year a mother-of-three from Woodside Park was the victim of a violent car jacking in Finchley Road.

The 50-year-old was left with a deep cut across her head and bruising on her face and body.

In March a petition with more than 1,000 signatures was presented to the Finchley and Golders Green Residents Forum requesting the installation of CCTV in Temple Fortune.

The cameras, which will be placed near shops in Temple Fortune, will cost the authority £150,000.
