A WEST Hendon man is looking to sue a supermarket chain after choking on a piece of plastic found in a desert.

Father of two Manoj Vekaria, of Brent View Road, said he was eating a Sainsbury's own-brand strawberry sundae on Tuesday when a rouge piece of plastic in the product became lodged in his throat.

The 30-year-old maintenance worker claims he began coughing and choking to clear the object, about the size of a two pence piece, from his airways.

He had to revert to making himself throw up to get the plastic out, and is now seeking compensation from the supermarket.

“At first I thought it was a piece of fruit,” said Mr Vekaria, who bought the desert from the West Hendon store on Sunday.

“When you eat a desert like that, you don't chew it, you just swallow, so it went straight into my throat.

“I was panicking at the time and only just managed to get it out.”

He also said he shares his deserts with his children, and admits he luckily did not on this occasion.

“We usually go half and half,” He said.

“My kids could have eaten it and it could have killed them.

“The store didn't seem that bothered when I went back so I am going to speak to some solicitors to see what I can do.”

Mr Vekaria said Sainsbury's had sent the plastic off for testing and he has been told to wait up to six weeks for the results of where it may have come from.

Parveen Johal, a spokeswoman for Sainsbury's, said: “This appears to be an isolated case but we have sent the product for analysis which we’re currently awaiting.

“We apologise for the distress and inconvenience this has caused and we’ve offered Mr Vekaria a goodwill gesture as well as a refund.”
