Lip reading 'lifeline' classes start in Hendon

A NEW series of lip reading classes will start in Hendon next month.

The classes, taught by Janet Zysblat, will take place on Wednesdays from 2.30pm to 4.30pm at St Mary's Church Hall, in Hendon Lane, and from 7pm to 9pm at Age Concern, in the Meritage Centre, Church End.

Rosalind Cohen, 70, from Foscote Road, Hendon, who only has hearing in one ear, has taken the classes for eight years.

She said: "It is a complete lifeline because I don't hear very well and it is great to meet others who are experiencing the same problems.

"It is about understanding how to read people, how to position yourself in a room, how to communicate effectively.

"It is more than just lip reading. It helps to give you confidence. In some ways, it's more like a self-help group.

"Plus, it's also a lot of fun."

The lessons cost £64 per term, with concessions for people on benefits or earning less than £15,000 a year.

The first two sessions can be attended free, without obligation to enrol.

Anyone interested in signing up for a class should call Janet Zysblat on 020 8202 3204.
