Football teams needed for special tournament against domestic violence

A FIVE-ASIDE football tournament is being held to show that Barnet people condemn domestic violence.

The tournament and a family fun day will be held at Barnet Football Club's Cricket Club in Barnet Lane on November 22 or White Ribbon Day, an international day against domestic violence.

White Ribbon Day calls on people across the world to show that domestic violence is not acceptable by getting involved in events of all kinds.

In Barnet the multi-agency Domestic Violence Forum has decided to hold the event, between noon and 4pm, to raise awareness of the impact that domestic violence can have on the lives of victims.

Barnet FC is providing a venue for free and giving away 50 pairs of tickets to watch a match as prizes.

Players will be at the event to present medals to the winning teams.

Janet Matthewson, community manager of the Barnet Football Club Community Trust said both the trust and the club were keen to show support for the cause.

“This uses us as a platform to help raise awareness of the campaign and goes with the way we want to interact with the community, using the football club and working together to highlight issues that need supporting.

“It's a way of cementing the communities together.”

The emergency services, council members and the Rolling Base youth entertainment bus will all get involved as well.

For younger visitors, face painting and children's activities will also be available and bands will also be performing.

Organisers are still looking for more teams ahead of the big kick-off.

Admission fees are £12 per adult team and £1 per child entering.

Councillor Matthew Offord, cabinet member for community safety and community engagement, said: "I entirely support the aims of this event which I hope attracts many families. If we can just get people to think about domestic violence, maybe we can stop more incidents happening."

If you have a team you would like to enter in the tournament, call PCSO Nicholas Chrissi on 07920 233744 or email nicholas.chrissi@met.police.uk by November 16 2009.
