FEARS the lack of a town centre framework for New Barnet would make it easier for supermarket giants to get planning approval is “fanciful” according to Barnet's planning boss.

No new supermarket planning applications are expected in New Barnet before its planning framework has been published, according to the council.

Residents of New Barnet have said that they are concerned that a delay in publishing the document would make it easier for Tesco and Asda, which own plots of land next to each other in New Barnet, to get a planning application approved.

Councillor Melvin Cohen, cabinet member for planning and environmental protection, said: “We have a robust existing planning department in the borough and the idea that a major supermarket could somehow slip through the net in the coming months is obviously fanciful.

“The council remains committed to delivering this framework and providing a sustainable and appropriate future for the town centre.”

Planners say that existing planning guidelines such as the Unitary Development Plan and the London Plan give them suitable guidance and cite their recommendation to turn down an application by Asda earlier this year as an example.

The supermarket subsequently withdrew its application.

Cllr Cohen added: “The preparation of the framework requires a wide range of issues and interests to be considered and has taken slightly longer than originally planned due to its complexity, the level of feedback from the community and our commitment to ensuring the final document is robust and fit for public consultation.”
