HUNDREDS of East Barnet residents could be without heating this evening in freezing temperatures after they lost their gas supplies.

The gas was cut off to around 600 homes after water entered the gas supply early this morning, National Grid has said.

It is believed the fault came from a burst water main which in turn damaged the gas pipe. Engineers have been on the scene of the burst all day working to address the problem.

Residents affected have been given alternative ways to cook food and portable heaters while their gas supplies are cut off.

The Met Office is reporting that temperatures will drop below zero again tonight in Barnet, and Hertfordshire Council’s emergency planning department has been drafted in to help vulnerable people in the area.

An incident room has been set up in St Mary’s Church of England Primary School, in Little Grove, and anyone who wants more information can contact 0845 605 6677.
