Gas supplies cut off in East Barnet

HUNDREDS of East Barnet residents could be without heating this evening in freezing temperatures after they lost their gas supplies.

The gas was cut off to around 600 homes after water entered the gas supply early this morning, National Grid has said.

It is believed the fault came from a burst water main which in turn damaged the gas pipe. Engineers have been on the scene of the burst all day working to address the problem.

Residents affected have been given alternative ways to cook food and portable heaters while their gas supplies are cut off.

The Met Office is reporting that temperatures will drop below zero again tonight in Barnet, and Hertfordshire Council’s emergency planning department has been drafted in to help vulnerable people in the area.

An incident room has been set up in St Mary’s Church of England Primary School, in Little Grove, and anyone who wants more information can contact 0845 605 6677.

People have not been identified as vulnerable or provided with heaters. I have over the last day and a half repeatedly told national grid about a vulnerable older person, and despite personal assurances for the centre, the help line, the barnet council press office and Mr Harper, the deputy leader of the council she has as of 5pm on day 2 had no leaflet dropped, and still has had no heater delivered. The old and vulnerable are being marginilised ad priority it seems is going to provide the well and able bodied in getting heating over the most needy.Despite my alerting them to an elderly person in need, no action has been taken. What chance then is there for those without an advocate. What is the emergency planning? This is not rocket science, go to prontoprint, get a company to deliver the leaflets, ask the churches and other voluntary sector to deliver the heaters! Job done. How much does Mr Harper get paid to get this so wrong? It was only after I spoke to someone from the press who put this to the centre that Lo and Behold, in true magical Christmas spirit a heater and hot plate magically appeared within 30 minutes. Shame on you all. Thanks to the Barnet Press for helping me raise this issue of inequity for the voiceless..
