Police buy extra speed gun to tackle dangerous driving around Barnet borough over festive period

AN EXTRA speed gun has been bought by Barnet police in a bid to clamp down on dangerous drivers over the festive period.

The move is to tie in with the Home Office drink drive campaign that is running over the holidays, and officers hope the speed trap operations will help warn and educate drivers.

The equipment has been bought by Barnet Safer Neighbourhood teams (SNT) and will be used exclusively by officers from those teams in areas where speeding and anti social driving is most prevalent.

Police said speeding is highlighted by residents as their “main priority” on most of the wards in the north of Barnet and is a concern to many others across the borough.

Recent operations have resulted in 242 drivers being stopped and spoken to, of which eight were reported and given a fixed penalty notice for using mobiles and five were given a fixed penalty notices for speeding.

A further two were reported for other serious driving offences. Each of these offences carries three points on your licence and a £60 fine.

Barnet's speed gun lead, Sergeant Jim Avey, of Oakleigh SNT said: “Buying a speed gun for the SNTs will enable them to tackle the blight of dangerous driving.

“We are seeking to educate those who stray over the speed limit of the possible consequences of their action.”

Thank goodness for the Neighbourhood teams what a fantastic job these people are doing in combating the reckless speeders. It does beg the question, however, what on earth are Barnet council are up to?Rather than spending all their energies and tax payers money in attacking the civil liberties of our aged community this council should be vigourously implementing 20 mph zones and speed reduction measures right throughout the Borough. The benefits are obvious, saved lives, curtailed 'rat runs' and some well deserved peace and quiet for all the community. Now what is wrong with that?
