Power crisis: Christmas contingency plan for vulnerable residents

ANY ELDERLY and sick people who are still without gas in East Barnet tomorrow will have somewhere to go for Christmas, according to National Grid.

Barnet Council and the gas supplier have launched a contingency plan to ensure that vulnerable people such as the elderly, disabled and unwell are looked after on Christmas Day if they remain without heating and hot water.

The organisations have said arrangements will be made to give them somewhere to stay overnight as well.

Gas engineers said earlier today they were confident that they had enough staff to get all the nearly 2,000 households who lost gas on Sunday, reconnected.

But whether they will succeed or not depends on whether all the remaining water can be pumped out of the system in time.

Those not considered vulnerable will still have some help to find somewhere warm to celebrate Christmas.

A National Grid spokeswoman said: “We are working with the council to identify those who need our help.”

She added that said customers left without gas over Christmas Day and Boxing Day will receive £100 per day over the two days.

The company is maintaining a presence in East Barnet over the holiday period.

To contact staff, call 07810 470890 or 07768 953923.

If you smell gas ring the National Gas Emergency service on 0800 111 999.

9.35pm and still no gas, 150 engineers supposedly, funny that - not seen anyone working since 4pm today, empty promises. £100 a day is a cheap option, given that they are paying the engineers four times that, they have done the maths.

Still don't get told anything, all info is via the media, hope all the directors of Veolia, National Grid have a nice xmas in their warm cosy houses, cheers guys.

I spoke to a NG engineer who has been here for days and had travelled from Derby. He said they are not paid overtime and just get paid a monthly salary regardless of how many hours they do. He felt bad that things hadnt worked out..guess its just an impossible situation..? Thankfully im staying with family away from the area..

Ebenezer,

Totally agree - the people doing the work that I've met have been fantastic ... although admittedly in the 6 days we've been without supply now I've only seen 3 people in total.

If National Grid are not paying these people overtime then that is truly appalling and hardly sounds like a company "moving heaven and earth" to get us reconnected. There seems to be a big disconnect between the national grid press releases and what is actually happening.

As for us - Christmas day, 6 days without gas and just hoping the electric stays on for what must be one of the peak days today.

pay rates seem very variable - the scousers who've just reconnected me (yay!!! for now .. talk of another leak so we may all be cut off again while they trace it...) were being paid VERY generously by the sounds of it -but also said they'sd spoken to others on the job who were on basic rate. Not fair - they should all be on at least double if not triple.

I've just returned from another visit to the Little Grove operations centre, apparently they've had a really bad day chasing water round and round the gas pipes and not re-connected many if any homes today.
The engineers are working up to midnight and we were told to go back tomorrow morning for a news update.
So now it's 6 days and counting......... soon we'll be in the second week and I doubt we'll be re-connected much before the New Year in Berkeley Crescent or Brookhill Road areas.
Allegedly (acccording to one story doing the rounds) the water gained access to the gas mains in the first place due to some replacement gas mains work going on in Churchill Road before the burst water mains happened.
So, not a good Christmas Day for the engineers or the residents.
I estimate over 200 homes and 1000 people had no gas for Christmas this year.
Good luck everyone!
