GRITTERS are continuing to target key transport routes as forecasters predict further snow showers throughout the day.

The snow that has been falling regularly since early this morning is expected to last most of the day and will likely cause further travel problems for commuters.

Barnet Council's gritting teams were sent out last night ahead of the onset of severe weather, and were again out from the early hours.

Their focus remains on priority one routes, which are the principle roads and main roads. These routes are treated prior to adverse weather conditions and in times of snow, continuously until the road is safe.

Council staff said the main aim was to keep those routes and public transport facilities open to avoid heavy disruption.

Attentions will then turn to priority two routes, which include town centres, tube, trains and bus stations, hospitals, public buildings and schools.

Refuse trucks went out at 8am, but in a statement, Barnet Council said: “Access to side roads is likely to be limited so a full round of collections today is unlikely.”

All of the council's 280 yellow grit bins have been stocked up and are intended to enable residents to grit public footpaths where needed.

Advice from council staff said the grit, which is available to all residents, should be spread thinly and evenly using a shovel.

The statement added: “It will help keep pavements clear if residents are able to remove snow from pavements before it freezes.

“Residents are advised to take extra care when using side roads and footpaths.”

People are also being asked to look out for elderly or vulnerable neighbours and friends who may need support during the cold weather.

Advice on the council's winter planning strategy and information on how to keep warm is available at www.barnet.gov.uk.

Anyone with concerns about the well being of someone they may know is also asked to contact the Social Care Direct at the council on 020 8359 5000.
