Barnet Rock School gear up for The Great Rock 'n' Roll Circus gig at the artsdepot next week

BUDDING young musicians will rock the house as part of a concert held by Barnet Rock School next week.

The musicians, aged between 13 and 19, are rehearsing for the final time this weekend before they play at The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus, at the artsdepot, in Nether Street, North Finchley.

The concert, in its third year, is the climax of a three-week performance course run by Barnet Council’s Youth Connexions and Music Service, which aims to offer the bands the opportunity to develop their performance skills under the guidance of experienced musicians.

The school ran in the February half-term holidays in a series of daily rehearsal sessions at Downs Sounds Studios, in New Southgate, followed by three final Saturday sessions up to the event next Friday.

The seven bands playing include IEYG, Vendetta Against The Girl, In Memory Of, Sunshine Supermen, The Chase, New Conscience and the 10 Plagues.

Organiser Marcus Fox works as a consultant for Barnet Music Services. He said: “I do feel very proud as they have all worked very hard to get to where they are.

“Quite a few of them are going through some personal issues and being part of the bands gives them focus and self-esteem.

“To see them at the concert communicating and delivering their performance will be great.”

Mr Fox’s daughter, Maria, 15, plays the bass guitar in the 10 Plagues. She said: “I play as both my mum and dad are musicians.

“I was looking for stuff to fill up my day and so I joined the band.

"I would like to carry on playing in the future."

Fellow guitarist from the 10 plagues, Alexi Zalesskiy, 13, said: “I really enjoy playing the guitar and we're all good together in the band.

"We’re all looking forward to the concert so we’re getting the practice in.”

The gig will take place at the artsdepot's Pentland Theatre next Friday at 7.30pm.
