A six-year-old girl who is unable to walk or see, and cannot even breathe without help, desperately needs people to come forward for a blood test to see if they can save her life.

Zoha Butt, who lives in Mount Road, Hendon, is suffering from osteopetrosis and the only thing that can cure her is a bone marrow transplant from an unrelated and probably Asian donor.

All of her family have been tested without success, so now Zoha is entirely dependent on a stranger coming to her rescue.

Zoha's bones are so dense she cannot produce blood and most children with her condition die before the age of seven. If someone has a direct match with Zoha's bone marrow type, shown by a simple blood test, he or she could making a life-saving donation.

Riffat Butt, Zoha's mother, has set up a special donor clinic, in association with The Anthony Nolan Trust, taking place on Wednesday, May 25, at the GP's surgery at 86 Audley Road, Hendon, between 4.30pm and 7.30pm.

There is another clinic on Saturday, June 11, between 12pm and 3pm, at Oakleigh School, Oakleigh Road North, Whetstone.

Mrs Butt said: "A simple blood test can save a life and we need the local community's full support. As a Muslim, the Quran tells us that saving a single life is saving the whole of humanity."

Zoha is most likely to find a match among her own ethnic community. The trust is encouraging more people from black and ethnic minority communities, especially young men, to join the register.

To register as a bone marrow donor, you must be between 18 and 40 years old; be in good general health; weigh more than eight stone, but not be overweight; and be willing to help save the life of any patient you may match.

Potential donors unable to attend the clinic but who wish to contact The Anthony Nolan Trust should visit the web site at www.anthonynolan.org.uk or telephone the trust on 020 7284 1234 or the 24-hour donor hotline on 0901 8822234.
