Memories of the Terrible Twins

2:24pm Friday 16th December 2005

If only Brentford could turn the clock back and put former strikers Jim Towers and George Francis in their present side they would win promotion at a canter, writes Tony Flood.

The Terrible Twins', who scored 61 goals between them in the 1958-59 season, are featured in Cult Bees and Legends Volume Two by lifelong fan David Lane and four of our readers can obtain a free copy if they win our competition.

Towers is among those giving eye-opening interviews, together with Steve Perryman, Frank Blunstone, Richard Cadette, Johnny Brooks and PR maestro Peter Gilham.

Jim, who hit 37 of those goals in the 1958-9 season and finished with 153 in 262 league games for Brentford, says: "George forced defenders to make mistakes and because of that he scored a lot more goals than me inside the area. He made a lot of goals for himself whereas I would wait for the right pass or cross, and I scored with a lot of shots from outside the box, too."

Towers reckons full-back Kenny Coote was the best Brentford player he played with or watched.
