Potters Bar rail crash inquest set for June

THE inquest into the Potters Bar rail crash will begin on June 1, it has been announced.

At a pre-inquest hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice on Thursday, Judge Michael Findlay-Baker set a date for the inquest. It will be held in the Spirella Ballroom at Letchworth and is expected to last several weeks.

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire coroner's office said: "The families will be given the opportunity to attend.

"We will be making the dates available and there is no restriction on who can attend."

This will come a year after Transport Secretary Lord Adonis announced an inquest would be held into the rail disaster, ruling out the possibility of a public inquiry.

Hertsmere MP James Clappison said: "I am very pleased to hear that a date for the inquest has been set for June 1.

"It has taken a long time for the wheels of justice to move forward and I very much look forward to some form of justice being found for the survivors of the accident and the bereaved families."

Seven people were killed and 76 injured when a high-speed train was derailed outside Potters Bar station in May 2002.
