THE newly elected Tory MP for Finchley and Golders Green “is Prime Minister material” according to his proud mother.

A beaming Marian Freer said her son Mike had fulfilled an ambition by becoming a Member of Parliament and praised his commitment to the role.

Mrs Freer had travelled down from her home in Annan, Scotland, to be at last week's General Election count.

She revealed to the gathered pack of journalists that the family, including Mike's late father, were all staunch Labour supporters, meaning Conservative Mike was the political black sheep.

“But if his dad were here now, he would be very proud of him,” she said.

“I am very proud of him because it has been an ambition of his for a long while.”

She told the gathered media of how her son had made his first Tory speech in Blackpool at the age of 19 without telling the family, who only found out after being told by friends he was on television.

But speaking after the former leader of Barnet Council claimed the constituency seat from Labour by almost 6,000 votes, Mrs Freer said: “I said to him 'It will be Prime Minister next' but he said to me 'no'.

“I have told him though that he is Prime Minister material.”
