Barnet borough has second highest number of road casualties in London according to Transport for London figures

NEW road casualty statistics show the borough had the second highest number of incidents across the whole of London last year.

The figures released by Transport for London (TfL) reveal there was a 15 per cent rise in the number of casualties on the borough's roads in 2009 compared to 2008.

A total of 1,403 incidents were recorded, second only to Westminster, and almost three times higher than the neighbouring borough of Harrow.

The TfL document includes details of incidents involving pedestrians, pedal cyclists, powered two wheelers and vehicle occupants.

Across London, there was a one per cent fall in the number of casualties, and the latest figures follow a 12 per cent drop in incidents in the borough in 2008 compared to 2007.

The table shows there were eight fatal collisions last year, down 56 per cent, with 129 serious incidents, and 1,266 slight casualties.

Tragically, the details have been released just days after a 37-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman were killed in separate crashes on the borough's roads.

A statement from Barnet Council said the borough has one of the largest road networks, and the largest population, in the capital.

Officers also highlighted how several major arterial roads, which are TfL run, “have a significant impact on accident figures”, with more than a quarter of recorded casualties occurring on these roads.

The statement added: “We’re continuing to analyse the recently published data to better understand the underlying reasons behind the rise, however it is encouraging the number of fatalities have fallen substantially.

“The council carries out road safety improvements at locations which have been identified using previous accident data. The authority also provides road safety education and training particularly in schools.”
