A Finchley synagogue has helped to raise over £1000 for Ethiopian children at a fundraiser, held last week.
Children from the New North London Synagogue Cheder, in East End Road, helped to raise funds by collecting one pound coins for a number of weeks before the event.
The school classes made signs and a hugely long coin counter, where each child was able to lay down their collected coins.
The event was set up by the synagogue to raise money for the Leo Baeck Centre in Israel, which works with Ethiopian children and their families in Israel. It hopes to break the cycle of extreme poverty the families live in.
Among other things the centre teaches parenting classes, language and literacy classes, social issues and basic survival. The children grow in confidence with their education and soon become “chatty" in their second language.
According to the New North London Synagogue, the day was a great success which involved football games, sticker transfers, bubble blowing and ice creams. Around 60 families were involved in the fundraiser held on Sunday June 27, and the synagogue said the day was “gloriously sunny” and an opportunity for the school's children to have fun with their friends.
