Knitting challenge involving innocent Smoothies and supermarket Sainsbury's kicks off to help Age Concern Barnet

KEEN knitters are being called to get their needles out and help a national campaign promoting winter warmth amongst older people.

The Big Knit 2010 has been launched by Age Concern Barnet with the aim of creating 2,500 woolly hats by the end of September.

The project is being run in conjunction with innocent Smoothies and supermarket Sainsbury's, and organiser are encouraging people of all ages to take part.

The mini hats will be sit on innocent Smoothie bottle in Sainsbury's stores from November 3, and for each one sold, 25p will be given to the charity to help fund winter warmth projects.

Mark Robinson, Chief Officer at Age Concern Barnet, said the hats are a great way to raise funds for what is a serious issue for many people in later life.

A total of 80 per cent of the money raised will fund projects on a local level, with the rest going towards funding national winter warmth activity.

Mr Robinson, said: “It’s that time of year again and we want to involve as many local people as possible in this year’s effort to knit 2,500 hats for The Big Knit.

“A 25p donation for every smoothie bottle sold will enable Age UK to fund vital projects aimed at keeping people in later life warm and healthy this winter.”

Knitters can contact Age Concern Barnet to get a simple hat pattern and the charity is welcoming donations of wool and needles to Age Concern Barnet centres to help others reach their target.

In order for the hats to raise funds locally, people are asked to send their completed hats to Age Concern Barnet, Meritage Centre, Church End, Hendon, London NW4 4JT.
