A FIRE on the Northern Line forced the closure of Hendon Central Station this evening.

The incident was reported at just after 6pm, with a number of people calling the London Fire Brigade having seen smoke bellowing up from below the bridge, in Queens Road.

The station was evacuated and the Northern Line was suspended northbound on the Edgware branch due to the fire.

Images from one witness showed a train waiting on the line just metres from where the smoke was flaring up.

It appeared as though the points system had over heated, and fire crews were dowsing the flames from above.

Commuters were left stranded and queues were building in the area as people sought alternative routes to continue their journey.

It is unclear yet whether further damage has been caused to the track as a result of the fire.
