A CHILDREN'S centre caretaker has helped transform a building site into a new play area.
Steve Dawson, 56, spent his evenings and weekends turning the 50m by 25m building site, at Underhill Infants School and Children’s Centre, in Mays Lane, Barnet, into a area where youngsters can enjoy their playtime.
Mr Dawson, who has worked at the centre for 25 years, said: "The area was just like a building site. It was just a muddy patch where the children couldn’t play when it was raining."
The project, funded by the centre itself, began when parents requested an outside play area for the children. The new garden is now kitted out with a patch of grass, picnic table, climbing frame and a set of bikes. Debbie Dearman, manager of the centre, said the feedback from both the children and the parents has been very positive.
She said: "In the recent hot weeks, the children have really enjoyed being out there."
Mr Dawson added: "It was a job worth doing and everybody’s pleased, so that’s a good thing."
