Jury asked to consider their verdict after two-month Potters Bar rail crash inquest

THE jury at the inquest into the deaths of seven people in the Potters Bar train crash has retired to consider its verdict.

Six passengers and one pedestrian were killed when the 12.45pm Kings Cross to Kings Lynn train came off the rails as it passed through the town on May 10, 2002.

The jurors were told during the two month inquest, presided over by Judge Michael findlay Baker QC, sitting as a coroner, the cause of the crash was a faulty set of points south of Potters Bar station.

Evidence given at the hearings in Letchworth pointed to the points being poorly maintained.

The driver of the train has been cleared of any blame as he was travelling at 98 mph, a legal speed, but the father of one victim said there should have been restrictions on place because Network Rail and Jarvis knew about the poor conditions of the section of rail.
