Barnet Labour's health spokesman accuses Barnet's Tories of 'rolling over' on Brunswick Park community hub plans

SCRAPPING the Brunswick Park community hub will deprive people of “badly needed” services, according to one Labour councillor.

Plans for the new health centre, library and children's centre were shelved on Wednesday after cash put forward by the Department for Education was pulled.

There were fears the development, a joint NHS Barnet and Barnet Council scheme, would not be completed by the end of the financial year.

Earlier council leader Lynne Hillan said she felt “aggrieved” by the funding cut while residents said they are “over the moon” it has been scrapped.

Labour's health spokesman, Councillor Barry Rawlings, said: "This is just another badly needed service to be cut in a long line of Government cuts that will leave a whole community without a health centre, a children's centre or a refurbished library.

“It's interesting to see that Tory council leader Lynne Hillan is 'aggrieved'. The question is what are she and the local Tory MP, Theresa Villiers, doing about it?

“When the Government announced the £80 million cuts to Barnet's school building programme Tory councillors refused to challenge the decision.

“Are they just going to roll over and accept all of these cuts or are they going to stop putting their pay first, start putting the community first and fight back?"
