LABOUR leadership candidate Ed Miliband has received the backing of the Hendon branch of the party following a visit to the area on Sunday.
Mr Miliband is in a tight contest with older brother David for the post, vacated by former Prime Minister Gordon Brown after the election defeat in May.
On Sunday the shadow energy and climate change minister addressed an audience of 100 Labour supporters in the Meritage Centre, in Greyhound Hill.
Labour spokesman Andrew Dismore, who lost the Hendon seat in May, leant his support to Mr Miliband, who visited him on the campaign trail in the build-up to the General Election.
He said: “He took many questions ranging over a wide variety of subjects including pensions, the NHS, the Middle East and Sri Lanka, as well as points concerning the future structure and direction of the party should he become our new leader.
“I believe everyone found him to be a very impressive candidate with new ideas and policies for the future, ranging from a living wage to the funding of higher education to more involvement of party members in developing policy.
“I am supporting Ed in his bid to be our leader and the next Labour prime minister and he has also secured the endorsement of Hendon Labour Party.”
The new leader will be elected at the party conference in September.
