CLASSIC buses will be taking to roads around Edgware tomorrow giving people a chance to relive the public transport of yesteryear.

The classic bus day on Sunday will recreate the bus routes from the 1960s. The bus journeys will be free and use some 35 buses from the period as well as older varities.

The event is operating in conjunction with the RAF Museum at Colindale, on the site of the former Hendon Aerodrome.

Organiser Steve Whitelegg said: "In those days buses had conductors to help you on and off. Although buses today are probably more wheelchair friendly, it was nice to have a conductor who could help you in other ways.

"People liked being able to jump on buses without doors although we wouldn't encourage people to do that!"

In addition to local services, some long journeys will operate on routes from central London in the morning - generally operated by the iconic Routemaster bus.

From early beginnings, the bus network grew rapidly between the wars as the area developed. By 1935, present day routes 113, 142, 240 and 251 were largely in place.

The 221 and 292 were introduced in the early 1960s when the trolleybuses were replaced.

Passengers should note there will be some detailed differences from present day routes - conductors on the buses will assist in these cases.

Services are planned for operation between about 10.30am and 5pm, with many calling at the RAF Museum.
