Man dies in crash on North Circular near Golders Green

A MAN died after a hit and run on the A406 North Circular Road near Golders Green in the early hours of this morning.

The male pedestrian in his 20s died near the junction with Golders Green Road at around 12.40am.

A second man, also in his early 20s, was hit at the same time and remains in an east London hospital.

The vehicle responsible did not stop, but police recovered a car later in a nearby side road.

Police have arrested a man in connection with the death. He is being held in custody in a north London police station.

The road was closed for several hours and caused major delays for commuters before reopening at 8.20am.

How many awful accidents have there been on the North Circular this year? When is something going to be done about this accident blighted area?

A406 has been neglected by this and past councils. Not only is the A406 very bad, it causes drivers to divert onto busy side roads, such as the colon hatch lane/friern barnet road turnoff. If the council paid more attention to this issue and less on how much they can increase their allowances by maybe something intelligent can be done to pressure TFL to sort this road out. I'd glad the 2012 Olympics are coming for one reason, let them use the A406, unless they get a dedicated special lane on that as well.!

Whilst this is a complete tragedy for those concerned, this part of the A406 has a pedestrian footbridge, which makes this death even more tragic.

Because the A406 is not a Council road maybe? it is actually the responsibilty of Tfl...

AmandaB, Hendon, as I mentioned the council can put pressure on TFL.

Yet another needless tragedy at this particular junction that could have beed avoided if pedestrians would not take the risk and use the footbridge that was built for the purpose and would cost them a couple of minutes rather than their life. Even more terrifying a thought is, when you see parents with their young children in pushchairs crossing the road instead of using the footbridge.

AmandaB, I don't care who is responsible for this stretch of road, the number of casualties on this stretch of the North Circular is appallingly high and something needs urgently to be done. Traffic flow issues are partly the problem, especially at Henley's corner, and the arguments about what to do there have been going on for years. In the meanwhile, how many lives have been lost? TFL, LBB, the police and all agencies should be working together to address the issues with no further delay.
