A NATIONAL short story competition has been launched by a group of writers from Finchely.
The Greenacre Writers are looking for entries from across the UK to uncover some of the best amateur literary talent.
The short story submissions can feature any subject matter and competition organisers will chose the best ones to make up an anthology which will be published next year.
Lindsay Bamfield, one of the founders of the Greenacre Writers, said: “We came together as a group and decided this would be a good way of expanding what we are doing.
“It is about not just the local writing community, but the wider writing community out there, and this is a nice way of all being part of it together.
“We have no idea how it will go, but certainly lots of people enter competitions to showcase their writing.”
The competition is open to all writers over the age of 16. Entries should be no longer than 2,000 and it is open genre. The closing date is March 31, 2011 and winning entries will receive a cash prize.
The launch of the short story search took place on Sunday at Waterstones, in High Road, North Finchley, with members from the group and journalist Lianne Kolirin, who will be judging the results.
Rosie Canning, from the group, said: “It was fantastic. This is a national competition which has been set off by members of this Finchley group and will produce an anthology of published work.
“This is the first time we have run this sort of competition and we just hope a lot of people will enter to ensure the book looks good.
“I can't tell you how excited we are about this. It is a wonderful thing and people already seem really interested.”
Greenacre Writers was formed by four writers from the area who are all working on novels. Membership has grown and expanded to three groups which include Finish That Novel, Short Story Group and Life Writing, comprising of autobiography, biography and memoir writers.
