POLICE patrols have been stepped up around Hampstead Garden Suburb after a schoolgirl was sexually assaulted on Monday afternoon.
The teenager was walking home from school at about 3.40pm when she was attacked.
Police said the girl was walking down an alleyway off Central Square, which runs through to Willifeld Way, when she heard someone running up behind her.
A statement from police said she was pushed to the ground and assaulted, before the man ran off.
The girl went back to school to report the incident to a teacher and police were called.
The suspect is described as white, aged in his 20s and of medium build. He was wearing black clothing and a black hat.
Detective Inspector Caroline Haines, from the Sapphire unit which deals with sex attacks, said there has so far been no arrests.
She added: “This was a very frightening incident for the victim and we are making sure she is fully supported by specially trained officers throughout this process.
“This assault happened at a busy time and I would like to speak to anyone who may have seen a man fitting this description in the area at the time.”
Anyone with information is asked to call the Sapphire unit on 020 8733 5062 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Chief Inspector Simon Causer, from Barnet police, said precautions have been taken to reassure people in the area.
He said: “We understand the local community will be very concerned about this incident and we are working closely with them to provide reassurance.
“Fortunately assaults of this nature in Barnet are rare but we have increased patrols in the area, especially at the end of the school day, and we will continue to provide this presence as appropriate.
“I appreciate that this assault has occurred at what should be a celebratory time for the Jewish community and if anyone has any specific concerns regarding this incident I would ask them to speak to their Safer Neighbourhoods Team.”
