A CROSS cultural event to entertain the elderly is taking place for a good deeds day later this month.

Alyth Gardens Synagogue, in Temple Fortune, will be working with the Shree Swaminarayan Temple, and St Alban’s Church, in Golders Green, on a series of projects for Mitzvah Day, on November 21.

Members from all three faiths will be performing a programme of music and dance for up to 100 elderly people before serving a lunch which reflects all three cultures.

Volunteers will be providing transport to and from the Temple, in Finchley Road, for those who need assistance, and the organiser from the Synagogue, Ron Finlay, said he hoped the day would help bring the community together.

He said: “We have had a relationship with both of them in the past and have done some joint work with them on Mitzvah Day.

“It has been a very interesting experience and it is a good way of creating community cohesion.

“The philosophy is different different between the religions, but there is a lot in common and we can learn from each other.”

This year, the Hindu community has organised Sewa Day to coincide with Mitzvah Day, with the joint aim of volunteering time and effort to support worthy causes in the community.

The trio of religions will be running a food collection stall outside the Sainsbury's stores, asking for donations which will be given to Homeless Action in Barnet and the Barnet Refugee Service.

Donations of spectacles can also be made at the Church, Synagogue and Temple, which will then be sent out overseas by the charity Vision Aid.

Mr Finlay said: “It is very good for members of the public to see us working together. It helps generate a feeling of good will and a good sense of community.”
