Barnet Council hands Catalyst improvement notices after legionella bacteria found at third care home

A CARE home contractor at the centre of a Legionella scare has been handed health and safety improvement notices by Barnet Council.

“Higher than normal” levels of the potentially deadly bacteria have this month been found at a third care home, Merrivale in Burnt Oak, operated by Catalyst Housing Group.

In February two other homes were found to have a problem in their water tanks after sampling by Barnet Council’s environmental health officers.

However, the council, which contracted the running of the homes to the group in 2002, said recent samples showed decontamination work had been successful.

Under the terms of the improvement notices Catalyst now must provide Barnet Council with up-to-date Legionella risk assessments for all their care homes in the borough.

Councillor Melvin Cohen, who is in charge of civic affairs, said: “We take any breach of health and safety regulations very seriously and the council will continue to sample the water systems at all five care homes run by Catalyst and will continue to oversee their treatment processes.

“Although higher than expected levels of bacteria were discovered at three homes it is important to stress that no link has been established between these sites and any case of Legionnaires’ disease.”

Risk assessments have so far been provided for Apthorpe Lodge and Dell Field Court, where the original outbreaks were discovered, and Meadowside.

An investigation by the Health Protection Agency into all Legionairres’ disease related deaths since last June has found no link to Barnet’s care homes.

Hang on a minute. Two homes were found to be contaminated in February. That should have sent a clear signal through Catalyst that procedures were not working and they should check across all their homes. To find another home is contaminated in March suggests they have a much deeper problem structural problem with the way these homes are operated. This comes at a time when Barnet Council are ploughing on with an outsourcing project that would see the huge swathes of the council, including Environmental Health Department privatised. People in Barnet should be asking their councillors some very serious questions about the risks associated with outsourcing and why they just aren't learning lessons from this latest Catalyst episode.

Anyone from the Town Hall got news about why their Health and Safety people were snooping around LA Fitness in New Barnet today checking for Legionella in their showers?
Certainly there were folk on extra cleaning duty in 18 East Barnet Road this afternoon spraying all the mould on the walls and tiles to cover up the nasty smell since the warmer weather caused the mushrooms to sprout in the changing rooms where the air-con hasn't worked for 6 months.........
Truly the LA Fitness cost-savings at the expense of public health are following the examples of Barnet Easy Council savings and Boy George national cuts.
Free face-masks all round tomorrow?
BTW, LA Fitness have form, Barnet have found Legionella in their showers more than once in recent years.
