Brian Coleman seeks solution to traffic chaos at Henlys Corner

BARNET’S London Assembly member has asked for a solution to traffic chaos at Henlys Corner.

Brian Coleman held a meeting with chief operating officer of London streets, Garret Emerson to stress residents were being severely inconvenienced by traffic tail backs caused by improvement works.

As a result Mr Emerson has made a commitment to examine the possibility of re-phasing the traffic lights to improve traffic flow.

Mr Coleman said: "I have always supported the overall improvement of Henlys Corner, but the management of the traffic flows since the commencement of works has been a disaster.

“It is vital for my constituents that traffic flow is tackled.

“The promise to examine the re-phasing of lights will hopefully facilitate the movement of traffic and if it can be achieved will be a welcomed result for my residents".

In 1991, Consarvative MP for Finchley and Golders Green, John Marshall was pictured drinking Champagne, celebrating the demise of the works at Henlys Corner which would have given us the much neaded underpass. We are now seeing the legacy of this shortcoming and I would suggest therefore that Mr, Coleman is a Hipocrite and a disgrace.

But any traffic relief from 1991 would have been swallowed up by extra traffic by now - what is the point of just moving the traffic jam up the road? And Boris predicts an extra million people in London by 2031.

The two arms of the Northern Line used to be connected, until just before the war. A light-rail line replacement, extended to Finchley, New Southgate/Arnos Grove in the east, would be perfectly feasible, financed by Barnet's massive redevelopment areas.

I was present at a meeting where Cllr Coleman was advocating the use of workers with stop and go signs to facilitate the better flow of traffic where road works are taking place, and I wonder if the answer is for Brian, in the spirit of the Big Society, to volunteer to undertake this duty at Henley's Corner, and gain some useful work experience? I think a hi vi jacket and hard hat would suit him, don't you?

I often wonder if the mostly faceless planners of such seemingly disastrous logistical projects such as the never ending traffic fiasco's of Henleys Corner ever live in the areas that their decisions affect ?, I do doubt it, we have been brought up to believe in "Great British" engineering, but when you consider the rapid and admirable re building of freeways in Los Angeles after an earthquake for example, we seem to pale in to a more fitting title of "Great British **** ups" !, I have resided in the area for neigh 50 years now and cannot really remember a time where that section of road was ever "Free Flowing" except for late evenings, probably for when the fat cats are being driven home by paid for rides from their paid for jolleys at the cost to their clients, The "Great British" tax paying public..., there is no reason to cone off 100's of metres of roads when no body is working there, or there are no coatings laid that need to cure, spot checks by building control could possibly assist, but they are seemingly more concerned with a private individuals home improvement scheme most of the time, and the home owner is usually not a big burly site foreman from a road gang is he
