THOUSANDS of pounds were raised for Macmillan Cancer Support through coffee stalls set up across Hertsmere on Friday.

Forming part of the annual fundraising project called the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, one event at Barclays Bank in Darkes Lane, Potters Bar, raised more than £7,000.

The Mayor of Hertsmere Peter Knell, who was joined by MP James Clappison, helped organise the charity bash.

He said: “It was an unbelievably fantastic day and we raised so much money, everyone involved worked really hard – especially with the weather being so hot.”

Macmillan Cancer Support is the mayor’s chosen charity for his year in office. Explaining why he picked the organisation, he said: “There are so many people living with cancer and terminal illnesses and they need support.”

Cllr Knell, who has seen a number of relatives affected by cancer, added: “It’s not only the person who has got the disease that needs help, it’s the families too. Macmillan is wonderful in supporting them both.”

The mayor thanked Barclays Bank for hosting the event and doubling all money raised up to £3,000.

He also thanked members of the Club 60 Plus, who had made a number of apple pies to sell at the event.

After the Potters Bar event, Cllr Knell attended a coffee morning organised by the Rotary Club of Elstree & Borehamwood at Metro Bank, in Theobald Street.

More than £300 was raised and the mayor helped draw a raffle.

Rotarian David Clout said: “The Rotary Club is grateful to Metro Bank for hosting the event and very thankful to all those who came out in support of such an important charity.”

Coffee mornings were also held at Starbucks and Barclays Bank, in Borehamwood.
