A BURGEONING community of Muslims held what they claim is the first ever celebration of Eid in Borehamwood on Sunday.

More than 100 guests of all different faiths were invited to St Michael’s Church, in Brook Road, to mark the end of fasting during the holy month of Ramadan.

Children were given presents and traditional food was served to mark the occasion.

Organiser Taufiq Lodhi hailed the celebration a success and said it was a day for families to come together.

Mayor of Hertsmere Peter Knell, who attended the event, said: “It was fantastic. They were such charming people and looked after us really well.

“I hope they can find somewhere they can call home soon.”

The group, known as the Borehamwood Muslim Community Centre, currently operate at Brookside Boys Club, in Buckton Road, for Friday prayers and at other venues throughout the year for significant dates in the Islamic calendar.

The 50 or so members are seeking a permanent home in the town, but have not yet found a suitable building.

The group, which was formed around two years ago, is optimistic they will find somewhere within the next couple of years.
