MEMBERS of Boreham Wood Women’s Institute will celebrate the group’s 88th birthday when they gather for their monthly meeting this Monday.

The local branch of the W.I. was set up in October 1923, meeting at a former church hall in Theobald Street.

88 years later the numbers have reduced from the original 63 ladies to just 19, but the group insists they are still going strong.

Sadly none of the original members are left, but one current member Florrie Cowley can remember how the club helped her settle into the town when she moved to Borehamwood in 1949.

The group will be joined by Hertsmere Councillor Pat Strack (Con/Kenilworth) to mark the birthday celebrations this Monday.

The Boreham Wood Women’s Institute meet on the second Monday of each month in Room 3 of the Manor House in Allum Lane, at 2pm.
