EASTENDERS’ actor Shane Richie hosted a star-studded fundraising event in aid of a Barnet based children’s charity yesterday.

Shane, who is an ambassador for Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice, encouraged guests to buy raffle tickets and bid in a silent auction at Elstree Studios.

The Big Night In fundraiser began with a tribute by Sonia de Freitas in honour of her son, Pedro who died on New Year’s Day earlier this year.

Ms de Freitas, who lives in Haringey, was joined by her daughter Rachel as they spoke about the joy Pedro had brought to their lives, his love of EastEnders and the continuing support they receive from staff and volunteers at Noah’s Ark.

Following their speech, guests were treated to live performances by famous singers and actors including Spandau Ballet lead singer Tony Hadley, street-dance group Flawless and 2009’s X Factor finalist Stacey Solomon.

A staggering £19,000 was raised for the charity which supports children with life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses in Barnet as well as Enfield, Camden, Haringey and Islington.

Speaking after the event, Shane said: “I’m very proud to be an ambassador for Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice. Tonight’s event has raised a phenomenal amount for the charity – thanks to everyone who took part and came along to make the evening such a success.”

During the past seven months Shane has been working closely with members of Noah’s Ark after pledging to raise the charity’s profile and help with fundraising events.
