"I don't know what I can do" leader of council tells North Finchley traders over parking woes

TRADERS are outraged after the leader Barnet Council said there was nothing he could do about parking issues when confronted by business owners at a North Finchley forum last night.

Councillor Richard Cornelius and highways manager Neil Richards faced an onslaught of criticisms to recent parking changes from traders who claim business has rapidly declined since the change to pay-by-phone was introduced.

Tempers flared when Cllr Cornelius explained: “I’m listening, but I haven’t got any intention to do anything else other than that.”

“I’ve heard you and it’s obviously affected me. I don’t know what I can do. I don’t know if I can do anything.”

Many exclaimed it was a “waste of time” to discuss the matter with the council, some asking why they attended.

Cllr Cornelius added: “What we will do is listen to what we are being told.”

Business owner Helen Michael said: “We are wasting our time – you’ve said in no uncertain terms that you’re not going to do anything. We are begging for our businesses, for our livelihoods. Please do something.”

Cllr Cornelius said that 115,000 people had already registered for the pay-by-phone system, but admitted there was a lack of publicity of the changes before they were introduced. He said advertising in this weeks’ Times Series newspapers as a step to try and rectify that.

Cllr Cornelius said: “We have listened to the fact that there is a problem. That there are people who don’t use mobile phones, or who won’t, we are reacting to this and we recognise that it was a mistake and remiss of us not to think of that sooner.”

He said vouchers and scratch cards were being introduced for people who cannot pay by phone.

He added: “We do need the revenue and if not from there, it will have to come from somewhere else. We are in a difficult financial situation.

“It is not a decision that is mine solely, it is a decision taken by a group.”

Chairman of the meeting Gary Ince, of consultany firm North London Business, asked Cllr Cornelius if parking can be reviewed, considering the impact it is having on businesses.

Cllr Cornelius replied: “I hear what is being said and I’ll think about it, but I don’t think there is anything that can be done at this stage.”

“We need some time to let the new scheme bed in.”

If the council knew what they were doing, they would have trialled a new system before abandoning the old one. The problems which they know belatedly recognise could have thus been avoided.

Richard Cornelius says there is nothing he can do. He could sack Brian Coleman for starters, but once again we have a council leader hopelessly out of his depth.

Absolutely pathetic: who is running this council - the leader Cornelius, or Coleman? Parking is not supposed to be run to generate income: its priority is meant to be the management of parking, for the benefit of residents. Cornelius, Coleman, and all their quivering cronies are writing their own political death warrants. So not all bad news, eh?

As I understand it parking charges cannot be used to boost the Council's general coffers. It has to be used on road-related schemes.

Blame Coleman, he started this cashless payment system without consultation. How about 30 mins free parking, enforced closely by CCTV parking monitors? Could be funded by using tax payer’s money diverted from paying union officials to some use. http://taxpayersalli

Also these 'elected' members have done nothing for Barnet, can't wait for the next local elections, hoping we have some UKIP representatives.

This is the death knell for the Conservatives on barnet council. What a shame they are taking local traders down with them as they go. The entire cabinet should do the decent thing and resign.

What a WASTE OF SPACE Richard Cornelius is.

I recently had a half an hour meeting with Cornelius and showed him incontrovertible proof that Barnet Council had made a false declaration to the County Court in order to dishonestly extract a large amount of money from me.

His reaction: "I have nothing to say and I am not going to do anything at all"

The sooner we get rid of these parasites, the better!

Oh I cant wait for the next elections....
Will the Blurbers from Barnet be standing ?
Lets see how transparant they are ?
It will be interesting to see how forthcoming they are when it is THEM being asked questions and not the other way around!
The only problem I can foresee will be in their manifesto.....If its like their FOI requests,it will take you through to the subsequent elections to read it!

So James, do we conclude that you think Cornelius is doing a marvellous job and handled this meeting really well?

and if that's how long it takes you to read FOI requests maybe you should consider having a few lessons. Adult illiteracy is a problem that can be overcome with professional help

Hey Rog,

Don't forget public libraries can also help improve adult literacy, for which we will always be indebted to the man who got the petition rolling to save them. You've got my vote Rog if you stand.
